Vanguard's Advice Portfolio Construction team is seeking an Engineering Manager who combines strong technical expertise with a passion for developing people and delivering business outcomes. In this player-coach role, you will lead a high-performing engineering team responsible for critical portfolio rebalancing capabilities used by PAS Advisors, while helping shape the technology strategy, architecture, and delivery approach for key Advice platforms.

As part of Portfolio Construction Technology & Management (PCT&M), you will partner with product and technology leaders to build and evolve cloud-native solutions that improve advisor productivity and enhance the client experience. This role offers the opportunity to lead talented engineers, influence technical direction, and drive innovation across modern applications, microservices, and AWS-based platforms.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of engineers, fostering an environment of collaboration, continuous learning, accountability, and inclusion.

  • Manage talent processes including hiring, performance management, development planning, and career growth for team members.

  • Partner with product managers, architects, and technology leaders to align engineering capacity and delivery priorities with strategic business objectives.

  • Provide technical leadership across application design, development, implementation, integration, and performance optimization.

  • Guide engineering teams in evaluating, selecting, and implementing scalable technology solutions and best practices.

  • Drive execution of multiple concurrent initiatives, ensuring delivery commitments, quality standards, and operational excellence are met.

  • Review and approve technical designs, architecture decisions, documentation, and engineering standards.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to communicate technical progress, risks, dependencies, and business value in a clear and effective manner.

  • Lead incident response, root cause analysis, and remediation efforts to improve system reliability and operational resilience.

  • Champion continuous improvement across engineering practices, DevOps processes, quality standards, and team effectiveness.

  • Participate in architecture reviews, code reviews, testing strategies, and technical governance activities to ensure high-quality solutions.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of training and experience; advanced degree preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience leading engineering teams while maintaining strong technical engagement.

  • Proven ability to coach and develop engineers across both technical and professional competencies.

  • Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

  • Experience influencing technical decisions and driving outcomes across cross-functional teams.

  • Experience managing delivery commitments, production support, and incident response activities.

  • Knowledge of DevOps principles, engineering metrics, and modern software delivery practices.

  • Experience leading teams through organizational, technical, or process change.

  • Understanding of responsible and effective use of AI-enabled tools and technologies.

Preferred Technical Expertise:

  • Node.js / Nest.js

  • Angular and modern front-end development frameworks

  • RxJS

  • REST API design and development

  • Jest and Cypress testing frameworks

  • AWS ECS / Vanguard ECSV3

  • AWS Lambda and serverless architecture

  • Microservices architecture and cloud-native application development

  • Java, Spring Boot, and Python development

  • SQL and AWS Glue

  • Experience with GraphQL and Supergraph architectures (preferred)

  • UI development experience (preferred for some teams within the product family)
