Certerra is seeking a Laboratory Technician to join our laboratory testing team. This is a hands-on position supporting engineers with the setup, execution, monitoring, and documentation of tests for building products and construction systems.
The ideal candidate has a mechanical, construction, manufacturing, or laboratory background, strong attention to detail, and an interest in developing technical skills in engineering and product testing.
Responsibilities
• Assist engineers with laboratory testing of building products and construction components.
• Set up and prepare test specimens, fixtures, instrumentation, and equipment.
• Perform testing in accordance with ASTM, UL, Miami-Dade, Florida, and other applicable standards.
• Operate and monitor mechanical, pressure, vacuum, environmental, and other test equipment.
• Install, assemble, modify, and disassemble test specimens and fixtures.
• Use hand and power tools to prepare specimens and test setups.
• Operate forklifts and overhead cranes to safely move test specimens, materials, and equipment.
• Install and monitor instrumentation, including load cells, pressure sensors, thermocouples, displacement gauges, and data acquisition equipment.
• Collect, record, and review test data for accuracy.
• Perform basic calculations and assist with data reduction.
• Troubleshoot test equipment, instrumentation, and test setups.
• Assist engineers in evaluating test results and identifying failures or unusual conditions.
• Prepare photographs, measurements, test notes, and other documentation required for test reports.
• Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment as directed.
• Maintain a safe, clean, and organized laboratory.
• Assist with equipment maintenance, fabrication, and improvements to laboratory test setups.
• Travel to customer facilities or job sites when required.
• Perform other laboratory and technical support duties as needed.
Qualifications
• Associate degree in engineering technology, mechanical technology, construction technology, or a related field preferred.
• Equivalent hands-on experience in construction, manufacturing, mechanical work, laboratory testing, or a related field will be considered.
• 2–5 years of relevant experience preferred.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot equipment.
• Ability to read engineering drawings, specifications, and test procedures.
• Comfortable using hand and power tools.
• Basic understanding of measurements, forces, pressures, and mechanical systems.
• Forklift experience preferred.
• Overhead crane experience preferred.
• Welding or fabrication experience is a plus.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
• Strong attention to detail and accurate recordkeeping.
• Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel as required.
Physical Requirements
This is a hands-on laboratory position. The employee must be able to:
• Lift and move materials, test specimens, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb ladders, and work around test equipment for extended periods.
• Safely operate hand and power tools, forklifts, and overhead cranes.
• Work around large construction components, mechanical equipment, Work in varying temperature conditions, including hot and cold environments, pressure/vacuum systems, and other laboratory hazards while following established safety procedures.
• Work both indoors and outdoors as testing requirements dictate.
• Ability and willingness to travel occasionally for work, including trips of up to one week at a time.
Schedule
Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:00 PM
Occasional overtime, travel, or work outside normal hours may be required based on testing schedules.
Compensation
$24–$30 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
