A Staff Surveyor at H2M architects + engineers is responsible for selecting and applying standard surveying techniques in the field and office to plan, organize, and execute land surveying projects under the guidance of our Professional Land Surveyors.

H2M’s Land Surveying team delivers the precise boundary, topographic, and construction‑phase data essential to successful site development. We provide ALTA/NSPS surveys, aerial mapping, detailed topographic surveys, construction layout, and as‑built documentation using advanced instrumentation and geospatial software. Our licensed surveyors combine technical expertise with efficient field practices to produce accurate, reliable, and engineering‑ready survey deliverables that support projects of every scale.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of in-office and field tasks associated with land surveying projects. Including accurately calculating and recording field data, reviewing job specifications, and planning fieldwork methods and costs.
  • Apply standard scientific/engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria, using judgment in making adaptations of standard methods and techniques in the field and office.
  • Review and download field data, prepare field notes, and draw sketches of existing site conditions, including drafting and editing surveys using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Prepare detailed daily job reports and discuss projects with the supervisor.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot complex instrumentation.

Education & Qualifications

  • 0 to 2 years of experience with surveying techniques in the field and office.
  • Knowledge of survey calculations, techniques, and procedures.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
  • Broad understanding and experience for operating surveying equipment, such as Total Stations, Data Collectors, GPS RTK & Static Observations
  • Ability to stand, climb, and walk continuously during an 8-hour period.
  • Ability to perform strenuous work in a varied climate (heat and cold, etc.)
  • Must have good computer skills and be able to learn survey-related software, and a working knowledge of AutoCAD.
  • Practice good judgment, have strong organizational skills, and verbal and written communication skills.

The compensation for this role is $26 to $34 per hour.

This is a full-time, non-exempt position eligible for pay at time and one-half for all hours worked in excess of 40 hours in a designated workweek.
