THIS POSITION IS LOCATED IN KNOXVILLE, TN 

JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

The Learning Specialist provides academic support to students across various colleges and departments at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences. This includes coordinating and delivering personalized academic coaching on learning strategies, conducting workshops on time management, test-taking, study skills, stress management, and board preparation. This position helps students navigate the rigorous demands of the health science curriculum, offering guidance on issues such as organization, test anxiety, and exam preparation. This position also involves evaluating and improving support services based on student feedback

Responsibilities

  1. Provides individual and group academic coaching to enhance students' learning strategies and academic success
  2. Develops personalized learning plans for each student, monitors and adjusts support strategies and maintains comprehensive records of all interactions.
  3. Administers, scores, and interprets learning assessments to inform academic coaching and student success strategies.  
  4. Designs and facilitates workshops, informational sessions, and board/licensure preparation resources to support student academic success.
  5. Provides proctoring services for students receiving testing accommodations.
  6. Supports campus-wide tutoring, retention initiatives, and other Academic Success programs.
  7. Manages Academic Success operations by coordinating scheduling, maintaining appointment records, communicating with students and campus stakeholders, and utilizing online systems to track services and student data.
  8. Represents Academic Success at new student orientations, resource fairs, campus tours, and other campus events.  
  9. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  

EDUCATION: 

Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Counseling, Higher Education/Student Affairs, Psychology, Social Work, Social Sciences, or a related field. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

EXPERIENCE: 

Two (2) years of experience providing coaching, mentoring, advising, instruction, training, or support services that promote student learning, development, and growth. Experience developing resources and facilitating workshops or presentations for individuals or groups.  

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with faculty, staff, students, and prospective students. 
  • Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to plan and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Skill in coaching, creating academic resources tailored to meet student needs. 
  • Knowledge of factors affecting student learning and success, including the needs of non-traditional students, veterans, and students with disabilities.
  • Familiarity with learning theories and individualized coaching techniques that promote student achievement.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively while building strong relationships with students, faculty, staff, and campus partners.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and other relevant technology platforms.

 

WORK SCHEDULE: 

This position may occasionally be required to work evenings and weekends.
