Role Overview

The Maintenance Engineer will work under the direct supervision of the Plant Engineer and Engineering Manager. The Engineer handles responsibilities that include development and implementation of various field projects from construction to infrastructure, new equipment procurement/installations and repairs, development and implementation of plant maintenance procedures and ongoing troubleshooting. The Engineer will coordinate support contractors and work with the maintenance and facilities team on new and existing projects and provide guidance where needed. 

This Engineer will utilize industrial programmable logic controllers (PLCs) to diagnose equipment failures and possess special training to restore facilities and/or manufacturing and packaging equipment to operational status. He/She will perform assessments/evaluations of Packaging equipment for efficiencies, proposes upgrades of existing equipment or new equipment for better efficiencies, and safe operations. Performs evaluation of facilities and utilities to accommodate new Packaging projects. Review drawings and blueprints as required.

Areas of Responsibility

  • Optimize the reliability of assets by implementing advanced proactive maintenance strategies
  • Evaluates equipment breakdown for corrective actions while maintaining department documentation.
  • Perform electrical and mechanical repairs on equipment in an efficient manner to decrease downtime.
  • Assists with equipment evaluation to improve performance, modify to enhance production, or suggest new equipment for process improvement and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with members of maintenance, operations, and production to improve the organization’s bottom line.
  • Provides direct day-to-day support and oversight of project elements and engineering activities
  • Visits project sites/areas to answer contractor questions on behalf of the supervising engineer and serves as liaisons between engineering and construction personnel
  • Develops project schedules and deliverable timelines under the supervision of engineering manager or plant engineer
  • Reviews blueprints, drawings and plans from external agencies and provides feedback to Engineering management.
  • Works in a safe and responsible manner to create an injury-free and incident-free workplace.
  • Complies with all job-related safety and other training requirements.
  • Keeps management informed of area activities and of any significant problems.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education & Qualification:

  • BS/MS degree in mechanical, electrical, or industrial engineering
  • 5+years of experience in building engineering/maintenance work. Specific experience in pharmaceutical/nutraceutical environment is a plus.
  • Trained and knowledgeable about PLC based instrumentation and control systems.

Certifications, Licenses, Credentials:

  • Certifications to diagnose and repair specific types of equipment.

Skills & Ability

  • Be current with the latest pharmaceutical /nutraceutical manufacturing equipment, facilities and utilities; inclusive of their design, installation, and operation.
  • Working knowledge of cGMP's as they relate to a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility.
  • Knowledge of industrial maintenance practices, with a demonstrated understanding of preventive maintenance through job experience and course work
  • Technical writing and excellent communication skills as they relate to a manufacturing environment; able to read, write and speak English effectively.
  • Able to read engineering drawings, blueprints and service manuals and possesses effective drafting /project planning skills.
  • Knowledge of ERP systems (SysPro, SAP); proficiency in MS Word and Excel
  • Ability to communicate with teammates to understand their needs and convert them into solutions.
  • Successfully perform mathematical and physics calculations under the supervision of an experienced engineer.
  • Strong problem-solving skills to devise technical and creative solutions for any issues that may arise during operations. 
  • Solid judgment with ability to make good decisions.
  • Ability to interact effectively with different departments and with all levels of management.
  • Work effectively in high pressure situations, change activity frequently, and cope with interruptions.

Physical Requirements (lifting, etc.): 

  • Work is regularly performed inside a manufacturing environment where temperatures can be

moderate, exposure to dust, odors, noise, and fumes. The noise level is usually moderate.

  • Ability to navigate office, lab, and/or plant floor working environments.
  • Uses hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects or controls, lifting to waist height and/or above shoulder height, frequent bending from waist, or squatting, walking short distances.
  • Occasionally works from a rolling ladder or step stool, must be to lean over equipment as well as kneeling on the floor to work under the equipment.
  • Must be able wear all PPE including lab coat, face mask, booties, gloves, safety glasses/goggles, safety shoes and respirators. Safety shoes are required PPE for this position.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 lbs.; occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds with mechanical or coworker assistance.
  • Physical demands involved in office work such as the ability to talk, hear, use hands to handle and feel; work on computer up to 7 hours a day; close vision required for computer usage.

Work Environment (Office, Warehouse, temperature extremes, etc.):

  • Work is regularly performed inside a manufacturing environment where temperatures can be moderate, exposure to dust, odors, noise, and fumes. The noise level is usually moderate. Employees can be exposed daily to chemicals and cleaning agents.
