SUMMARY/PURPOSE

The Medical Billing and Coding Instructor facilitates meaningful learning of course competencies and proactively supports all facets of the learning environment. This role is responsible for teaching the Medical Billing and Coding course, along with related Medical Administrative Assistant (MAA) courses including Introduction to Insurance, Medical Office Procedures, and Legal and Ethical Principles. Through curriculum development, instruction, and classroom management, this position supports Summit Academy OIC’s mission of preparing students for living-wage careers in healthcare.

Curriculum Development and Instruction

  • Develops and delivers curriculum for the Medical Billing and Coding course within the Medical Administrative Assistant (MAA) program, ensuring alignment with established competencies and industry standards.
  • Teaches Medical Billing and Coding along with related MAA courses, including Introduction to Insurance, Medical Office Procedures, and Legal and Ethical Principles, using lecture, demonstration, and learning-centered instruction.
  • Delivers instruction, adapting teaching methods to the delivery format and to the learning styles of urban adult students.

Classroom and Learning Environment Management

  • Manages the learning environment by maintaining accurate records, submitting grades and reports on time, and enforcing academic and attendance policies.
  • Plans differentiation strategies to address the individual learning needs and styles of students.
  • Regularly assesses student learning using multiple forms of assessment to determine grades in accordance with established standards and criteria.

Student Support and Professional Modeling

  • Models professional behavior and industry-standard practices consistent with expectations for healthcare and medical billing and coding professionals.
  • Teaches pro-social behavioral patterns conducive to success in the healthcare field, including safety, ethics, HIPAA compliance, and employability skills.
  • Relates professional and industry experience to learning by incorporating current medical billing and coding trends, technology, and best practices into coursework.

Professional Development and Community Involvement

  • Contributes to a learning culture by participating in curriculum and system task forces, supporting campus events such as orientation and graduation, and engaging in related workshops and meetings.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Medical Billing and Coding Expertise: Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology, body systems, HIPAA, and legal and ethical issues as they relate to medical billing and coding.
  • Instructional Ability: Skilled in teaching adult learners of varying abilities and diverse backgrounds using competency-based methods.
  • Classroom Management: Strong classroom management skills.
  • Excellent Communication: Strong written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Problem-Solving and Time Management: Strong decision-making, problem-solving, and stress-management skills in a fast-paced environment.
  • Collaborative Team Player: Works effectively as part of a team.
  • Technical Proficiency: Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office; familiarity with online learning platforms preferred.
  • Medical Office Procedures Knowledge: Strong understanding of medical office procedures and legal and ethical standards in a healthcare setting.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

None.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position operates in a professional school setting, and requires the Healthcare Instructor to maintain a professional appearance and demeanor. The work environment is fast-paced and requires strong time management and prioritization of job duties. THIS IS A FULL-TIME ON-SITE POSITION. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This role requires the ability to stand for extended periods while instructing, approximately 75% of the time, with the remaining 25% spent sitting to complete paperwork and administrative tasks. The instructor must be able to hear and speak clearly to communicate with students, and should be able to lift files and instructional materials as needed.

POSITION TYPE & EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

This is a full-time, exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is not eligible for overtime pay. Standard hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Evening and weekend work may be required to fulfill job duties. 

TRAVEL

This position does not require travel.

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Associate’s degree in a healthcare-related field.
  • 1–2 years of field experience in medical billing and coding.
  • Experience teaching adults.

PREFERRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field.
  • More than 2 years of teaching experience.
  • 3+ years in Medical Billing & Coding
  • Online teaching experience.
