Located on 133 wooded acres near Pittsboro, North Carolina, Camp Royall provides year-round recreational programming for children and adults with autism, including summer overnight and day camps, weekend retreats, adult programs, and family events. Reporting to the Recreation and Camp Services Director, the Camp Royall Director provides leadership for all aspects of camp operations, including program quality, camper experience and safety, staff leadership, financial performance, facilities, family engagement, and year-round operations. We’re looking for a hands-on leader who can embrace the heart and energy of camp while bringing strong operational leadership, organization, accountability, and vision to the program. What You’ll Lead As Camp Royall Director, you’ll provide overall leadership for a complex, year-round camp operation, including: Programs & Camper Experience: Oversee summer and year-round programming, ensuring experiences are organized, engaging, safe, and responsive to the needs of individuals with autism across the lifespan. Staff Leadership & Development: Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and develop year-round and seasonal staff while building a culture of clear expectations, accountability, collaboration, and strong camper support. Safety & Family Engagement: Maintain a safe, inclusive, person-centered environment and build trusted relationships with campers, families, and caregivers while providing leadership through behavioral, medical, safety, and other complex situations. Financial & Administrative Operations: Manage an annual operating budget of approximately $1.5 million, including revenue and expenses, staffing decisions, purchasing, registration, documentation, and other administrative systems. Facilities & Risk Management: Help oversee the operational needs of Camp Royall’s 133-acre property, partnering with property staff and organizational leadership on maintenance, facility improvements, emergency preparedness, and risk management. Recruitment, Partnerships & Growth: Support camper enrollment and the recruitment of seasonal staff, interns, and volunteers while collaborating with ASNC teams, donors, and community partners to strengthen Camp Royall’s reach and long-term success. Who We’re Looking For Camp Royall needs a leader who can see both the big picture and the details. The right person will bring strong operational leadership while embracing the energy, relationships, and mission that make camp special. You may be a strong fit if you: Lead with a balance of support, accountability, and clear expectations. Are highly organized and able to manage competing priorities with strong follow-through. Communicate confidently and build strong relationships with staff, families, organizational leadership, and community partners. Remain calm, adaptable, and solutions-focused when unexpected challenges arise. Understand that exceptional programs require both a strong mission and strong systems behind them. Qualifications Strong candidates will have the following: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university  At least two years of supervisory or management experience in a residential camp, recreation, human services, or similar program setting,  At least four years of supervised experience working with individuals with autism or other developmental disabilities Experience leading a residential camp, summer camp, recreation program, or similarly complex operation is strongly preferred. Compensation, Benefits & Housing Salary: $60,000–$80,000 annually, based on relevant experience and qualifications. Optional on-site housing may be available and can be discussed as part of the overall compensation package.
