This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Cook is responsible for the quality of the meals prepared for the Senior Nutrition Program, and for the safe and sanitary conditions of the kitchen and storage areas.

SALARY RANGE: $25.00 - $27.00/hour

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Plans and leads in the preparation of meals and monthly menus which meet the nutritional and YMCA expectations
  • Oversee the condition of the kitchen and storage areas, and ensure that they are kept in a high state of cleanliness and sanitation.
  • Provide for the safe storage of all leftovers and perishable foods
  • Maintains inventories and food orders in consultation with supervisor
  • Prepares meals, snacks, and special food requests.
  • Assist Kitchen Helper to washes dished as need.
  • Strictly enforces sanitary standards as well as kitchen etiquette of all who enter the dining hall.
  • Attend training and meetings (Weekend if is necessary)
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Senior Center Director

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The physical demands of the position include:
  • Visual and auditory ability to observe and to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency situation.
  • Ability to lead and interact in group activities and perform related physical skills.
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Ability to climb, push, and pull.
  • Ability to lift and carry objects up to 40 pounds.
Qualifications
  • Possess a culinary or comparable job experience
  • Able to coordinate and manage tasks
  • Available on weekend and evenings as needed.
  • Basic Computer Skills
  • Must have Food Handle's Certification or obtain one within 30 days of employment
  • Receptive to positive and critical feedback
  • Able to work independently
  • Self-motivator and great attitude, friendly and personable
