Our Roots

Sharyland Water Supply Corporation was established in May of 1968 for the purpose of providing safe, affordable drinking water to the rural communities in and around Mission, McAllen, and Edinburg. We continue to strive in that endeavor.

Sharyland Water Supply Corporation was created by a group of determined, community-minded men in the 1960's. With the help of Farmers Home Administration, a loan was acquired and construction began to build a rural water system. Initially, 700 property owners committed to take water service once construction was complete. Today, more than 50 years later, there are over 19,000 water connections on the system.

The Corporation has approximately 100 square miles of Certified Area, 800 miles of water lines, three water plants, four elevated storage tanks and plans for additional water system improvements in the works.

The Corporation has over 100 employees and a 7 person Board of Directors, all of whom are dedicated to the job required to ensure that Sharyland Water Supply Corporation continues to be the best it can be.

Your Impact

As a Backflow Clerk, you’ll help protect public health by keeping Sharyland’s cross-connection control records accurate, timely, and audit-ready. This entry-level role is a strong way to launch your career and develop skills in compliance documentation, customer communication, and data tracking.

Key responsibilities include reviewing backflow test reports for completeness and regulatory compliance; tracking annual testing status for customer accounts; preparing and sending notices for deadlines, non-compliance, and corrective actions; maintaining approved tester/vendor files (including licenses and gauge certifications); generating compliance lists and reports for program leadership; supporting documentation for enforcement actions; and answering questions from customers, testers, and internal teams.

Required skills/qualifications:
- Strong written/verbal communication and professional customer service
- High attention to detail and excellent organization
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (or similar)
- Ability to manage databases, records, and filing systems
- Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently

Apply to grow with a supportive team and build a solid foundation in utility compliance.

A Typical Day

Your day is steady and structured, with variety coming from the flow of reports and questions. You’ll start by checking what came in—test paperwork, updates from testers, and customer messages—then move through your tracking tools to confirm what’s due soon and what’s past due. Midday often includes drafting clear, friendly notices and pulling clean lists for supervisors so everyone has the same picture of compliance status. You’ll also spend time keeping files neat and easy to retrieve, so audits and inspections don’t become fire drills. Throughout the day, you’ll coordinate with field and office teammates, learning the “why” behind the rules while building confidence in how to explain next steps to customers and vendors. Occasional overtime may be needed during higher-volume periods.
