Our Roots

Sharyland Water Supply Corporation was established in May of 1968 for the purpose of providing safe, affordable drinking water to the rural communities in and around Mission, McAllen, and Edinburg. We continue to strive in that endeavor.

Sharyland Water Supply Corporation was created by a group of determined, community-minded men in the 1960's. With the help of Farmers Home Administration, a loan was acquired and construction began to build a rural water system. Initially, 700 property owners committed to take water service once construction was complete. Today, more than 50 years later, there are over 19,000 water connections on the system.

The Corporation has approximately 100 square miles of Certified Area, 800 miles of water lines, three water plants, four elevated storage tanks and plans for additional water system improvements in the works.

The Corporation has over 100 employees and a 7 person Board of Directors, all of whom are dedicated to the job required to ensure that Sharyland Water Supply Corporation continues to be the best it can be.

The Role Scope

As a Plant Maintenance Mechanic, you’ll help protect reliable water service by keeping critical plant and station equipment operating safely and efficiently across multiple facilities. You’ll troubleshoot and repair mechanical systems, support installations, and execute preventive maintenance on pumps, motors, and related equipment.

Key responsibilities include fabricating or fitting parts using hand/power tools; supporting building and equipment upkeep (including HVAC, carpentry, and painting); operating heavy equipment as needed (e.g., skid-steer, backhoe, forklifts); completing work from written/oral work orders; and maintaining asset records and weekly maintenance reports in the AMP.

Required qualifications/skills:
- High School Diploma or GED; 3+ years mechanical/repair experience
- Working knowledge of mechanical maintenance practices, hazards, and safety precautions
- Proficiency with tools/equipment; strength in at least one trade (e.g., mechanics, pipefitting, welding, machining, electrical)
- Microsoft Office; English instructions (bilingual English/Spanish preferred)
- Valid Texas Driver License; ability to obtain CDL Class B w/ Tank endorsement within 6 months if required; willingness to obtain TCEQ Water Operator D if requested
- Ability to perform sustained physical work, including confined space/elevated work and fit testing

A Typical Shift

Your day starts with reviewing work orders and coordinating priorities with the Chief Operator, then staging tools, parts, and safety controls before heading to a plant or station. You’ll move between sites, shifting from precision hands-on work at equipment pads to facility upkeep inside mechanical rooms. Expect a steady rhythm of documenting what you found, what you corrected, and what needs follow-up in the AMP, then closing out the week with clear maintenance reporting. Some weeks include after-hours call-outs or scheduled weekend coverage to support operational needs, and you’ll plan ahead so the team’s workload stays efficient and predictable.
