Sonic Summary

info
  • Nexus is looking for a hands-on Fleet Manager with 5–7+ years of experience in managing vehicle and equipment fleets within field services, utilities, or construction environments.
  • The role involves owning the fleet lifecycle management, establishing preventive maintenance programs, and ensuring DOT compliance while managing relationships with regulators and insurers.
  • Candidates must be based in the Houston area and be willing to travel regularly to field sites and headquarters, with weekly field travel expected.
  • The successful candidate will be responsible for tracking fleet KPIs, managing the fleet budget, and implementing telematics systems to enhance performance and cost efficiency.
  • The salary for this position is competitive and commensurate with experience.

Nexus is seeking a hands-on, field-first Fleet Manager to own the Company's vehicle and equipment fleet end-to-end while serving as a trusted partner to the COO and Operations leadership.

This is a builder and standard-setter role. The successful candidate will formalize fleet processes, drive utilization and cost-per-mile performance, and build the fleet infrastructure needed to support Nexus as it scales from roughly 100 to 250+ field employees over the next five years.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with the COO and Operations leadership to build and execute a fleet strategy that supports growth, new-customer wins, and geographic expansion.
  • Own vehicle and equipment lifecycle management — acquisition, assignment, preventive maintenance, and replacement/disposal scheduling.
  • Establish a preventive maintenance program and formalize vehicle inspection reporting that feeds a continuous improvement loop.
  • Lead DOT compliance — driver qualification files, hours of service, vehicle inspections, and drug & alcohol testing — and manage relationships with regulators and insurers.
  • Implement and manage telematics/GPS systems to monitor utilization, idle time, driver behavior, and fuel consumption.
  • Partner with HR and Safety on driver onboarding, MVR monitoring, and driver safety training.
  • Track fleet KPIs — including cost per mile, downtime/utilization, maintenance spend, and accident rate — and present performance at monthly operating reviews and quarterly board meetings.
  • Manage the fleet budget, negotiate vendor and leasing contracts, and control fuel and maintenance costs.
  • Scale the fleet and staffing model to support expansion into new regions (Georgia, Colorado, and beyond) and a growing crew base.

What we are looking for:

Candidates will be evaluated primarily against the following:

Top Priority

  • Field Services Fleet Experience — 5–7+ years managing a vehicle/equipment fleet in a field services, utilities, or construction environment, including DOT compliance.
  • Houston Presence — Houston-area based (or able to be), with the ability to travel to field sites and HQ regularly; weekly field travel expected.
  • Scalability — has built and run a fleet program supporting 150–250+ vehicles or field employees across multiple sites or states.

High Priority

  • Leadership and Cultural Fit — comfortable in the field and the boardroom, low ego, leads through change, and can stand up infrastructure as a true business partner to Operations leadership.
  • Cost & Utilization Track Record — multi-year record of reducing cost per mile and downtime while improving fleet utilization.

Important

  • Multi-Site Field Services Leadership — has been the lead fleet person for a growing, multi-site field services company; experience in a PE-backed platform is a plus but not required.
  • Technology & Telematics Implementation — has implemented or optimized telematics/GPS and maintenance-tracking systems.

Nice to Have

  • Integration / M&A Experience — exposure to fleet integration during add-on acquisitions.
