Position Summary
The City of Pharr is hiring a Cataloging Assistant to support accurate organization and access to library collections. This full-time, onsite role helps ensure materials are properly classified, recorded, and ready for public use.
Key responsibilities include overseeing classification workflows, creating and maintaining bibliographic records, supporting technical services staff through training and guidance, entering items into the bibliographic/circulation system, and assisting with physical processing, typing, and filing.
Required qualifications/skills:
- Knowledge of general business and library procedures; strong attention to detail
- Ability to perform basic cataloging using professional classification/cataloging tools
- Proficiency with microcomputers and common software (databases, spreadsheets, word processing); ability to learn library systems quickly
- Effective communication in English (Spanish is a plus)
- Professional judgment, confidentiality, and ability to work under pressure

A Typical Workday
Your day runs Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM at 121 E Cherokee Ave, with a strong emphasis on regular, reliable, and prompt onsite attendance. You’ll balance focused desk time with steady coordination across the library, shifting between computer-based work and hands-on tasks as priorities change. Expect to communicate frequently with coworkers to confirm details, keep records consistent, and ensure materials move smoothly through the library’s internal workflow. You’ll follow established rules, policies, and procedures, protect confidentiality when needed, and stay organized under deadlines—closing out the day by documenting progress and preparing next steps for the team.
