A Brief Overview
Under the direction/guidance of a mentor (principal investigator), assumes responsibility for a specific, on-going research project. The experience will serve to extend, refine and enhance skills necessary for professional and career development, and will enable the individual to broaden his/her scientific background by acquiring new research capabilities. It is expected that this individual will conduct independent scholarly research, and will contribute directly to the overall research goals of the project and the research group.
This role will be expected to participate in project planning, recording and interpretation/evaluation of data, and communication of results. This position will also be expected to acquire technical, lab management, and manuscript/grant writing skills; and participate in seminars, lectures, poster sessions and presentations at national meetings. This role also may be required to supervise junior lab members, develop new methods and protocols for research, and assist with the development of other research projects in the lab.

About the Laboratory
The Long Laboratory investigates the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying skeletal development, bone homeostasis, and disease, with a particular focus on skeletal stem and progenitor cells, cellular metabolism, and the integration of bone and whole-body metabolism. Research combines genetic mouse models, developmental biology and biochemical approaches to define disease mechanisms and identify potential therapeutic targets.
Ongoing Projects:
- Bone Metabolism in Diabetes: Investigating the cellular and molecular basis of bone fragility and increased fracture risk in diabetes animal models, with the goal of identifying new therapeutic targets.
- Skeletal Metabolism: In vitro biochemical and in vivo genetic studies of major metabolic pathways in skeletal cell types during normal development, homeostasis and bone repair.
- Skeletal Stem and Progenitor Cells: Investigating the identity, location, and regulation of skeletal stem and progenitor cells that build, maintain and repair the mammalian skeleton. Age-dependent changes in the stem and progenitor cells are evaluated as a basis for bone aging. Ongoing studies use single cell technology and genetic lineage-tracing methods in animal models to identify and track these cells.

SALARY RANGE:
$20,800.00 - $110,400.00 AnnuallySalary ranges are shown for full-time jobs. If you're working part-time, your pay will be adjusted accordingly.
