POSITION SUMMARY:  

The Budget and Compliance Accountant is responsible for supporting the financial health and operational effectiveness of the organization through accurate budgeting, financial reporting, grant compliance, and analysis. This position plays a key role in developing, monitoring, and maintaining organizational and program budgets; preparing financial documentation for donor and grant-funded activities; ensuring compliance with federal, state, and contractual requirements; and supporting annual audit activities. The Budget and Compliance Accountant collaborates closely with program staff, leadership, and external partners to provide clear financial insights that inform organizational planning and decision-making. This role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate financial information to both finance and non-finance professionals. 

 

MAJOR FUNCTIONS:  

  • Supporting management of the organizational annual budget and partnering with departments to develop and manage program and organizational budgets.
  • Forecasting budget needs related to program scaling and strategic planning.
  • Analyzing monthly budget variances and working with teams to develop timely resolutions.
  • Developing financial reporting for donor proposals, including major gifts, corporate, foundation, and individual donor requests.
  • Submitting compliant, timely, and accurate invoices for federal, state, and government grants, as well as donor-funded projects, A/R & A/P including processing drawdowns
  • Maintaining and communicating accurate and real-time budget tracking tools.
  • Interpreting and explaining financial information clearly to both finance and non-finance professionals.
  • Assisting in reviewing historical data and trends to inform current and future strategic decisions.
  • Supporting the organization’s annual Financial Statement and Uniform Guidance audit, including providing audit documentation and communicating with auditors.
  • Reconciliation of general ledger accounts through management of transactions, analysis, and communicating variances to ensure accuracy of reports and financial data.
  • Serving as a main point of contact for partners and sub-grantees for financial matters. 
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Ability to lift up to 10–15 pounds occasionally (files, binders, office materials).
  • Regular communication with staff, partners, and external stakeholders, requiring clear verbal and written communication.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive accounting or budget management experience, preferably in a nonprofit, government, or grant-funded environment.
  • Knowledge of GAAP, grant accounting, and federal compliance requirements (Uniform Guidance).
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, formulas, data analysis).
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare accurate financial reports and maintain organized documentation.
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate financial concepts clearly to diverse audiences, including program staff and leadership.
  • Experience working with federal, state, or foundation grants is highly preferred.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • CPA, CMA, or progress toward certification.
  • Experience with nonprofit fund accounting systems (e.g., QuickBooks with classes).
  • Experience managing or monitoring sub-grants or partner financial relationships.
  • Knowledge of federal reporting portals (e.g., PMS, SAM.gov,G5,etc).
  • Background in multi-year budget planning or financial modeling.
  • Experience supporting organizational or program audits.
  • Familiarity with the nonprofit sector and understanding of programmatic funding structures.

NOTE – All Staff Requirements

  • Must have or able to obtain a State of Arizona Department of Public Safety Fingerprint Clearance Card within 90 days.
