Department Overview

The Ambulatory Infusion Clinics provide infusion and injection services to patients referred from a variety of specialties including but not limited to: Rheumatology, Neurology, Dermatology, Cardiology and other non-oncology service lines. The infusion staff work closely with a multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality, evidenced-based, patient centered infusion therapies. The ten ambulatory non-oncology infusion chairs at the Center for Health & Healing 1 and six chairs at Immunology infusion Physicians Pavilion are open Monday to Friday.  

Function/Duties of Position

Ambulatory Infusion Clinic Nurses assess patients at their infusion appointment for medical preparedness to receive their prescribed therapy. They engage in multidisciplinary communication with providers Monday through Friday to develop and implement patient infusion plans with input from various other disciplines. The clinic nurse is responsible for initiating, administration of approved infusion therapies, monitor labs associated with approved infusion plans and patient education at the conclusion of their visit.

The ambulatory infusion clinic nurse works directly with the patient and family, members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure they are educated on the infusion therapy and to monitor for signs and symptoms of hypersensitivity and when to seek elevated medical treatment.

Ambulatory infusion clinic nurses staff both Physicians Pavilion 4 in the Rheumatology Infusion room and at the Ambulatory Infusion Clinic South Waterfront location at Center for Health and Healing Building 1 on the 7th floor.

Ambulatory Infusion Clinic Nurse Roles:

Roles: In addition to the above basic RN functions, also provides the following

• Demonstrates competency in administration of antibiotics, immunologics, biologics, and other approved infusion therapies.
• Responds to acute illness using assessment skills and technical skills and immediately activating medical support.
• Documents in electronic health record all care provided, phone advice given, teaching provided, and infusions performed.
• Thoroughly documents all nursing activities according to compliance guidelines and on the same day that care is provided. Records medication start and stop times to ensure appropriate billing. Documents clearly and thoroughly so knowledge of patient’s condition and any psychosocial factors are clear to the next care provider.
• Coordinates care within the infusion clinic only.
• Demonstrates competency in vascular access devices, blood draws and associated care and maintenance following policy.
• Anticipates the needs of patients and families. Assesses psychosocial and physical needs of the patient during all interactions. Engages appropriate team members to support the family throughout their experience

Infusion clinic nurses are aware of and comply with regulatory requirements of DNV, Medicaid, Medicare, and Oregon Nurse Practice Act and applicable Board of Pharmacy rules for OR.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum three (3) years of clinical nursing experience in the last 7 years.
• BSN Graduates: Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA) 30 days before start date.
• Associate degree Nurses required to enroll in BSN program within 3 years of hire and complete within 5 years of hire
• Current, unencumbered Oregon State Registered Nurse License
• BLS from AHA required. New hires will be enrolled and required to complete during orientation
• Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

*Completion of Infusion Nursing Society Fundamentals of Infusion therapy (FIT) modules certification during orientation period

Preferred Qualifications

• Record, track, and assign duties and processes to ensure appropriate billing and revenue generation, when applicable.
• Ability to effectively communicate within a multidisciplinary team.
• At least 2 years of hospital nursing experience with direct patient care.

• Basic computer skills include the ability to send/receive email, navigate information technology associated with the position, and use Electronic Health Record information and tools.
• Recent Experience working in ambulatory infusion.  
• Certified Nurse Infusion certification.
• IV access proficiency.
• Experience working with Central Venous Access Devices and their management.

• Length of Orientation:
  • New Graduate RN- NA
  • Specialty 4-6 weeks depending on specialty area and work hours
  • Experienced RN not in specialty 6-8 weeks depending on onboarding progress
  • Resource Nurse: Time varies based on experience and work hours available during onboarding.
