Job Summary and Responsibilities:

The Senior Accountant supports the Assistant Controller in managing and overseeing a broad range of accounting functions to ensure the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of the organization's financial records. This role is responsible for maintaining day-to-day financial transactions, preparing and analyzing financial reports, assisting with month-end and year-end closing processes, and ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, and organizational regulations.

The Senior Accountant plays a key role in strengthening internal controls, supporting audits, reconciling accounts, and identifying opportunities to improve accounting processes and financial reporting. The position requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively across departments to support the organization's financial goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Accounting Responsibilities                                          Percentage of Time: 65%
  • Maintaining the organization's general ledger, including preparing monthly reconciliations for balance sheet and expense accounts to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Review monthly reconciliations for multiple investment pools and prepare journal entries to allocate investment returns across applicable funds.
  • Prepare specialized financial reports and assist with ad hoc financial analyses, process improvement initiatives, and special projects to support organizational objectives
  • Provide cross-functional support to Finance team members, ensuring continuity of operations and timely completion of departmental responsibilities.
  • Provide backup support for recording non-cash gifts and associated sales in the general ledger.
  • Provide back up support for ACH verification process.
  1. Audit                                                                                  Percentage of Time: 15%
  • Prepare selected audit work papers in collaboration with the Assistant Controller, ensuring the timely and accurate preparation of OCF draft annual financial statements.
  • Assist the Assistant Controller in documenting accounting processes through written procedures and scripts, maintaining updates as needed, and initiating process improvement projects to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Support the Assistant Controller in coordinating financial database training, troubleshooting database issues, and prioritizing system enhancements to improve functionality and user experience.
  1. Compliance and Special Projects                                   Percentage of Time: 20%
  • Prepare federal and state quarterly estimated tax payments and related tax filings for OCF and its supporting organizations.
  • Draft annual federal and state tax returns for OCF and its supporting organizations, including all related tax filings and compliance requirements.
  • Manage a broad range of compliance activities while staying current on accounting, tax, and regulatory issues impacting nonprofits and community foundations.
  • Assist in the review of trust financial statements and tax returns.
  • Stay informed of accounting and tax issues related to nonprofits and community foundations. 

Supervisory Responsibilities                                                     Percentage of Time: 0%

Qualifications


Education and Experience:

  • Solid knowledge of accounting functions gained through seven or more years of progressively responsible accounting, finance, or related experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting from an accredited four-year institution. 
  • CPA preferred.
  • Nonprofit tax return preparation and compliance experience a plus.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills: ability to convey information clearly and effectively, especially to those without a financial background
  • Excellent working knowledge of MS Windows, Excel, Outlook, Word, internet, and experience working in a network environment with an integrated database; keyboarding proficiency
  • Able to analyze, think critically and explain alternatives clearly, good problem solver; uses appropriate level of judgment
  • Comfortable with ambiguous and/or complex situations
  • Excellent customer service skills; provide service that is courteous and competent, promoting trust and confidence 
  • Strong time management and organizational skills: detail-oriented and accurate. Has ability to prioritize and manage several tasks efficiently, accurately and timely; ability to meet multiple deadlines; ability to quickly shift priorities and adapt to change

 Compensation and Benefits:

  • Hiring Range: $92,000 - $100,000 annually depending on experience. 
  • Salary offers are determined in conjunction with an internal pay equity assessment. This initial hiring range reflects our starting offer based on your skills and experience. It’s important to note that this is just the beginning; our overall salary structure offers additional opportunities for growth and advancement based on performance and development within the role, as well as resources available.
  • This is a full-time, exempt position.
