Technology Transfer Transactions Specialist

The Technology Transfer Transactions Specialist supports Brigham Young University's Technology Transfer Office by managing technology commercialization transactions from initial agreement preparation through execution and post-signature handoff.

The position works closely with the Director of Technology Transfer and licensing professionals to move licenses, options, confidentiality agreements, amendments, and related transactions efficiently through the contracting process. The specialist serves as the primary coordinator once a transaction is ready to proceed, maintaining momentum through drafting, document circulation, revisions, communications, approvals, signatures, and completion.

The position requires exceptional organization, attention to detail, responsiveness, professional communication, persistence, and the ability to manage a large number of transactions simultaneously.

What you'll be doing in this position

Transaction Management and Closing

• Manage technology transfer transactions from the point at which business terms are substantially established through final execution.

• Coordinate circulation and review of agreements among licensees, entrepreneurs, faculty, university personnel, and other participants.

• Track outstanding documents, comments, approvals, and signatures.

• Follow up consistently with counterparties to keep transactions moving toward completion.

• Identify stalled transactions and proactively determine the next action required.

• Coordinate revisions and communicate requested changes to the appropriate licensing professional or university office.

• Maintain accurate status information for all active transactions.

• Confirm completion of required documents and information before closing a transaction.

• Coordinate post-signature handoff for invoicing, compliance, records, and other administrative needs.

Data and Agreement Support

• Ensure that agreements are reflected accurately in the office’s database.

• Supervise students as necessary to maintain accurate records.

• Help identify opportunities to simplify and accelerate recurring transaction workflows.

Pipeline and Process Management

• Maintain an organized pipeline of pending technology transfer transactions.

• Provide regular status reports regarding agreements awaiting action, signature, approval, or follow-up.

• Monitor transaction cycle times and identify recurring sources of delay.

• Develop and maintain checklists, systems, and processes that improve transaction speed and reliability.

• Work with Technology Transfer staff to improve office workflows as transaction volume increases.

General Technology Transfer Support

• Communicate professionally with faculty inventors, entrepreneurs, companies, attorneys, university personnel, and other stakeholders.

• Assist with records, reporting, and administrative activities associated with technology commercialization.

• Support other Technology Transfer Office initiatives and priorities as assigned.

What qualifies you for this role

Minimum Education Required:

Bachelor's degree required. (A degree in business, finance, law, communications, technology, science, engineering, or a related field is preferred.)

Relevant professional experience may be considered in evaluating a candidate's qualifications.

Experience Requirements:

Experience with work requiring persistent follow-through and careful attention to detail is preferred.

Experience in one or more of the following areas is particularly helpful:

• Contract administration

• Business transactions

• Sales operations

• Deal execution

• Project management

• Technology commercialization

• Startup or entrepreneurial environments

Prior technology transfer experience is not required.

Skills, Abilities, and Characteristics:

• Exceptional organizational ability and attention to detail.

• Strong follow-through and a demonstrated ability to bring projects to completion.

• Comfort managing many simultaneous transactions and deadlines.

• Professional and persistent communication skills.

• Ability to follow up repeatedly and appropriately without losing momentum.

• Sound judgment regarding when to act independently and when to escalate an issue.

• Ability to establish positive working relationships with faculty, entrepreneurs, companies, attorneys, and university personnel.

• Comfort working in a fast-moving environment with a high volume of activity.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to learn university databases and workflow systems.

Pay Grade: 51

Typical Starting Pay: $28.25-$36.25 ($59,000-$75,500)

The actual compensation offered will take into consideration internal equity and may vary based on the candidate’s job-related experience, knowledge, skills, and other relevant factors. Candidates with very significant work-related experience may receive an offer higher than the posted typical range.
