Job DetailsJob Location: Reading - READING, PA 19601The Lifeguard is responsible for maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, on the deck, and throughout the surrounding aquatic areas. This position provides active surveillance, consistently enforces safety rules, responds promptly to emergencies, and creates a safe, welcoming environment for YMCA members and guests. Essential responsibilities include: Maintain active and continuous surveillance of assigned aquatic areas. Recognize and respond immediately to emergencies in accordance with YMCA procedures and established rescue protocols. Perform rescues, provide emergency care, and complete required incident reports. Consistently enforce pool rules, safety policies, and aquatic-area guidelines. Inspect the pool and surrounding areas for hazards before and during each shift. Perform required equipment checks and ensure emergency equipment is available and operational. Conduct and document pool chemical testing when not actively guarding, as assigned. Maintain accurate records required by the YMCA and applicable health and safety regulations. Develop positive and professional relationships with members, participants, guests, and coworkers. Assist with maintaining the cleanliness of the pool deck, bathrooms, and other assigned areas. Attend required staff meetings, drills, and in-service training. Perform other related duties as assigned.   Qualifications Must be at least 16 years old. Current YMCA Lifeguard certification or an approved equivalent certification. Current CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen certifications. Ability to successfully demonstrate required lifeguarding, rescue, and emergency-response skills. Ability to maintain the physical and mental readiness required for certification and emergency response. Ability to remain alert and focused throughout the assigned shift. Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with members, guests, and staff. Ability to recognize distress signals, alarms, and other sounds in a busy aquatic environment. Ability to clearly observe all areas within the assigned zone of responsibility. Ability to perform water rescues and meet the position’s swimming, strength, and physical-response requirements, with or without reasonable accommodation. Dependable attendance and willingness to participate in required training and safety drills.
