Position Summary

TECO-Westinghouse Motor Company is seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer, PE – Data Center Power Systems to lead the concept development and one-line design of data center power distribution and protection systems ranging from 480V to 161 kV.

This position is responsible for developing safe, reliable, and code-compliant power system architectures from the utility interface through to IT loads. The Senior Electrical Engineer will provide technical leadership throughout the design process, perform and review system studies, define equipment ratings and protection schemes, and provide engineering direction to detailed design teams.

The ideal candidate will have strong experience in power system design and analysis, hands-on proficiency with ETAP, SKM, or similar software, and a deep understanding of NEC and IEEE standards. Experience with large-scale data centers, medium-voltage equipment, generator paralleling, and microgrid concepts is highly preferred.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop system one-line diagrams and power flow concepts for data center applications.
  • Perform and/or review:
    • Load flow studies
    • Short-circuit studies
    • Arc-flash studies
    • Protection and coordination studies
  • Define equipment ratings, configurations, and protection schemes for:
    • High-voltage equipment
    • Medium-voltage equipment
    • Low-voltage reclosers
    • Switchgear
    • Transformers
    • UPS systems
    • Busway
    • Generator systems
    • Related power distribution equipment
  • Provide technical direction and design criteria to Electrical and Mechanical Engineers responsible for detailed design.
  • Ensure detailed designs remain consistent with the overall system architecture and design concept.
  • Review and approve system studies, equipment selections, and key engineering drawings.
  • Ensure designs comply with NEC, IEEE standards, utility interconnection requirements, and customer specifications.
  • Develop detailed electrical equipment specifications for Purchasing.
  • Work with Purchasing to review OEM quotations and bid documents for electrical equipment.
  • Support customer and internal design reviews.
  • Present system study results and respond to technical questions from EPCs, utilities, and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs).
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Project Management, and Supply Chain to optimize system designs for:
    • Performance
    • Safety
    • Cost
    • Constructability
  • Serve as a technical subject matter expert during factory testing and commissioning.
  • Assist with troubleshooting, technical clarifications, and design issues during testing and commissioning.
  • Maintain compliance with Company policies, ISO 9001 standards, safety procedures, and applicable workplace requirements.
  • Maintain regular attendance as an essential function of the position.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree (B.S.) from a four-year college or university in Electrical Engineering, with 5+ years of related work experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in power system design.
  • Hands-on experience with ETAP, SKM, or similar power system analysis tools.
  • Deep knowledge of NEC and IEEE standards.
  • Experience designing or supporting large-scale data center power systems preferred.
  • Familiarity with medium-voltage gear (5–38 kV) preferred.
  • Experience with generator paralleling systems preferred.
  • Familiarity with microgrid concepts preferred.

Professional Engineering License

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Texas, or the ability to obtain a Texas PE license within 12 months.

  • Ability to effectively present technical information to customers, engineers, management, EPCs, utilities, and AHJs.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret technical instructions presented in mathematical or diagram form.
  • Working knowledge of statistical tools.
  • Bias for action and strong ownership of assigned projects.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with general supervision.

Work Style

This position operates under general supervision and requires a self-starter who can take ownership of assigned projects and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

The successful candidate will be expected to provide technical leadership throughout the power system design process, from initial system architecture and studies through equipment selection, factory testing, commissioning, and customer support.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This position regularly requires standing, walking, using hands and fingers, reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, as well as talking and hearing. The employee may frequently be required to climb or balance and may occasionally be required to sit.

The position may occasionally require lifting and/or moving up to 20 pounds. Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The work environment includes regular exposure to vibration and frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock. Occasional exposure may include wet or humid conditions, elevated or precarious locations, fumes or airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually high.
