Overview

The Senior Maintenance Technician is responsible for instilling a positive first impression to all guests through the development of a clean and well-maintained facility. The Senior Maintenance Technician assists the Facilities Director in the preventive and ongoing maintenance of all branch facilities. The Senior Maintenance Technician is responsible to keep the branch facilities, equipment and grounds in good condition and working order to maintain facility safety standards as approved by the YMCA of San Diego County.

WORK DESIGNATION:

  • In-Person at various Community Support Services (CSS) facilities throughout San Diego County
    • Please note that the work designation may change based on business needs.

PROGRAM SUMMARY:

 

Community Support Services (CSS) operates multiple facilities that provide critical support services to diverse communities across San Diego County. These locations include a mix of residential apartment complexes, short-term residential houses, and administrative offices that support both internal operations and direct community-facing programming.

 

Our residential and program sites are central to the delivery of trauma-informed, participant-centered services, supporting individuals and families experiencing housing instability, mental health challenges, and other complex needs. The administrative offices not only house essential organizational functions but also serve as hubs for program delivery, staff collaboration, and direct engagement with the communities we serve.

 

This role plays a vital part in ensuring all facilities are safe, well-maintained, compliant, and welcoming, supporting both the Mission of the Y and the well-being of the people we serve. It involves an understanding of residential property operations, program space functionality, and the ability to effectively manage facilities across multiple locations and service types.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in all necessary repairs, construction projects, and upkeep to buildings, include painting, roofing, fire safety, tile repair, minor electrical, HVAC preventative maintenance and plumbing.
  • Assist with landscape management and improvements.
  • Conduct extensive cleaning & housekeeping as necessary.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records including all equipment & small tools.
  • Proactively participate in safety protocols.
  • Ensure the safety of all guests when operating power equipment and landscaping machinery.
  • Repair cardio and fitness equipment as necessary.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on equipment throughout the facility.
  • Repair and/or replace equipment as needed.
  • Assist the Facilities Director in major renovation to building and grounds as directed and within building codes.
  • Responsible for keeping the Facilities Director informed of maintenance and facility related issues that could affect the overall operation of the YMCA.
  • Maintain shop area free of clutter
  • Perform custodial work as needed

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position occasionally requires travel throughout San Diego County.

Qualifications

  • Minimum age of 18 years old
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in facility maintenance, painting, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, or related fields.
  • OSHA 30 is required within 6 months of hire
  • Experienced in Lock Out/Tag Out
  • Certification in HVAC/electrical or lifts are preferred
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of building maintenance and facility equipment repairs to include but not limited to basic HVAC, plumbing, irrigation and landscape systems, lock and key work, concrete repairs and electrical repairs; and the knowledge to maintain building code and operational compliance.
  • Strong background in painting and general repairs preferred.
  • Physical ability to work with machinery and basic construction equipment.
  • Physical ability to lift 50-60 lbs. safely and operate various motorized equipment necessary to perform the job.
  • Understand the approved use of various chemicals and cleaning agents and be able to use and follow all SDS materials/precautions and directions associated with them.
  • The position requires sitting, standing, walking, the use of ladders and kneeling for extended periods of time both indoors and outdoors.
  • Ability to identify when external vendor support is needed and effectively guide and communicate with vendors
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.

JOB COMPETENCIES:

  • Proficient in developing policies procedures and safety regulations for aquatic facilities
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act in an emergency situation
  • Good problem solving and mechanical skills.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • A general knowledge of the use of hand and power tools, electrical, plumbing, flooring and tile, cardio and exercise equipment repair and the ability to understand mechanical systems.
  • Must be highly organized and detail oriented.
  • Ability to work independently with the high-level problem-solving skills to provide high quality results

PRE-HIRE CONTINGENCIES:

  • Licensing, state law and our funders require that applicants of critical positions within Community Support Services be fingerprinted, prior to reporting to work, and include subsequent arrest notifications
  • CPR/AED, and First Aid Certification, must include Adult and Child/Infant, within 30 days of hire, and must be from one of the following certifying organizations: American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or American Safety and Health Institute
  • Position will require additional clearances in order to comply with all program, licensing, state law, and funding requirements:
    • Negative TB test results obtained within the past one year, prior to first day, and annually thereafter, as required
    • Exclusion and Debarment checks prior to first day and monthly thereafter
