UCSF Fitness and Recreation inspires growth and health on the UCSF campus through fitness, community, and play. The Group Fitness unit is an integral part of Fitness and Recreation and provides customer service while ensuring participants participate in Personal Training (PT) instruction in a safe environment. The Personal Trainer works under direct supervision of the Asst Director of Fitness Programs and is responsible for carrying out the day-to-day operations of the Fitness unit, which includes customer service, creating and following lesson plans and providing quality instruction to all program participants.

Department Overview

UCSF Fitness and Recreation operates two fitness centers at UCSF.  We provide fitness and wellbeing services to UCSF students, faculty, staff and community members through a broad range of fitness, recreation, aquatics, personal training, outdoor programs, and health and wellness programs.

Provides activity instruction to program participants, individually or in groups.

 

  • Supervise the fitness floor during designated shifts. 

  • Maintain client base of either 8-15 hours per week (fee based client contract hours) and/or monthly revenue based on production hours. 

  • Exhibit excellent customer service

  • Custom design a safe and appropriate Personal Training program based on client’s needs and goals.

  • Keep the fitness floor neat and clean.

Maintains a supportive environment for program participants and facilitate involvement.

 

  • Conduct new member orientations which include: Par-Q health and goal questionnaire, Body Composition assessment (body fat percentage and circumference), resting heart rate and blood pressure, introduction to machines and personal training skills.
  • Proactive member interaction
  • Promote Personal Training sales based on client and departmental goals
  • Lead fee based and free workshops when needed.
  • Conduct fitness floor trainer duties by addressing member’s needs between clients. 
  • Promote cross unit activities such as outdoor programs, membership, group exercise, recreational sports, and Arts & Events.

  • Keeps all required certifications current and complies with mandatory UCSF training requirements 
  • Attends staff meetings and trainings

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Nationally recognized Personal Training certification 
  • One year or more of experience as a Certified Personal Trainer
  • Working knowledge of program activity practices and procedures.
  • Verbal and written communication skills in the English language, active listening, dynamic flexibility, critical thinking, multi-task and time management skills.
  • Ability to exercise independent sound judgment and employ reasoning skills.
  • Client service minded, entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking skills.
  • Ability to successfully pass FBI and DOJ Criminal Check.
     

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Exercise Science or a related field of study strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of campus policies and procedures.
  • Basic skills in computer programs relevant to job duties.
  • Rehab or injury management experience
