Mission

TAR’s mission is to power intelligence for the world. We are building the world’s first off-grid power plant for data centers powered by renewable technologies.

We firmly believe AI should be built in the US for the benefit of all people. For that, power must be fast, clean and scalable. We are singularly focused on delivering GW-scale power faster than anyone has ever done, by rethinking every layer of the stack.

We vertically integrate to solve every bottleneck, from racking systems to power electronics to dispatch algorithms to on-site construction.

Leave your mark on the future of civilization-scale energy infrastructure.

Company

TAR is both a hardware and software company, we are building out massive, critical, physical infrastructure. TAR is working directly with one of the largest compute providers to scale and deploy 5GWs by 2028.

We operate on…

  • High ownership. High Agency. Own project end-to-end. Great people don’t need to be managed.

  • Speed. We achieve great things on incredible timelines. We push ourselves to go faster.

  • First principles. No ego. No hierarchy. Challenge every assumption.

  • Passion. Solving the energy problem is one of the largest challenges that faces the world now and in the future.

About the role

TAR develops, builds, and operates fully islanded solar and storage campuses that deliver firm power to AI data centers, and runs them as a growing fleet. That business generates a wide software surface: energy and plant data, fleet telemetry, tooling for construction and operations, and the customer-facing systems that sit on top of them. As VP of Software, you own all of it outside robotics, spanning the core platform, data, cloud infrastructure, and internal and customer-facing tooling. You take the software organization from where it stands today to what a fleet of GW-scale campuses demands, set the architecture the rest of the team builds on, and partner with the autonomy team on the interfaces to robotics without owning onboard autonomy. This is a leadership-team role for an engineer with 10+ years of experience, including 5+ years leading software organizations, based at our San Francisco engineering office.

Responsibilities

  • Own the software strategy and technical roadmap for TAR's core platform, data, and business-critical systems, aligning engineering priorities with the company's energy-infrastructure mission and business goals.

  • Build and lead the software engineering organization, hiring and developing individual contributors and engineering managers as scope grows, as a group distinct from the autonomy and robotics software team.

  • Set system architecture across platform, data, cloud infrastructure, and internal and customer-facing tooling, keeping systems secure, reliable, and built to scale with the business.

  • Drive the software development lifecycle end to end across all non-robotics systems, from roadmap and prioritization through release, monitoring, and continuous improvement.

  • Partner with the autonomy team on the interfaces between company platforms and robotics systems, including data pipelines, fleet telemetry, and reporting, without owning onboard autonomy software.

  • Serve as the senior software voice on the leadership team, shaping investment decisions, roadmap trade-offs, and technology strategy alongside engineering, product, and executive leadership.

  • Represent software to customers, partners, and investors when technical credibility in platform and data systems is what earns trust.

  • Establish the engineering standards, security practices, and reliability processes the broader software organization builds on.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years in a leadership role at the Director, Head of, or VP level building and running a software organization.

  • Direct, hands-on experience managing a software engineering team, including hiring, structuring, and developing both individual contributors and managers.

  • Demonstrated ownership of platform, data, or infrastructure software for an operationally intensive business, taking systems from early development through production scale.

  • Deep expertise in platform architecture, data systems, or cloud infrastructure, with the judgment to set technical direction others build on.

  • Track record of building and scaling a software organization from zero to one while setting technical direction and engineering process.

  • Strong communication skills, comfortable representing software and platform decisions to executive leadership, customers, and investors.

Nice to have

  • Experience building software for energy, utilities, or other industrial infrastructure operators.

  • Experience partnering with hardware or robotics teams on data integration, such as telemetry or fleet data pipelines.

  • Background at a high-growth, venture-backed infrastructure or industrial technology company, such as Anduril, Palantir, or SpaceX.

Salary and Benefits

  • Up to $15K relocation bonus

  • Unlimited PTO

  • Health, Dental, Vision insurance

  • $1K monthly stipend for meals
