About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a Geospatial Technician to join our Wyoming/Montana environmental consulting business. In this role, you will support natural and cultural resource programs in the Sheridan, Wyoming offices. SWCA's GIS Department consists of 80+ GIS Professionals with diverse backgrounds in GIS design, cartography, data management, and more.

 

You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to support project delivery and contribute to high-quality environmental outcomes. This role offers the opportunity to build foundational technical skills, gain hands-on experience, and grow your career in environmental consulting.

 

This is a regular (with benefits), hourly, non-exempt, and full- time position, reporting into the Sheridan, WY office. Highly-qualified remote (= distributed) individuals are strongly encouraged to apply.

What you will accomplish

  • Analyzes spatial data using GIS software to support project needs, engaging in the interpretation of geographical information using various tools and methodologies.
  • Assists field data collection by supporting team members who use GPS technology and other surveying instruments, ensuring accuracy and adherence to best practices for data collection in diverse environmental settings.
  • Maintains GIS databases to ensure data integrity and accessibility, encompassing data entry, data set updates, accuracy checks, and project data organization.
  • Produces maps and other graphical representations of spatial data, creating cartographic-quality maps and visualizations that communicate spatial analyses effectively.
  • Collaborates with team members on geospatial projects, contributing GIS expertise to project planning, execution, and reporting.
  • Learns and applies new geospatial technologies and methodologies, continuously expanding skills and knowledge in GIS through adopting industry trends and new techniques.
  • Assists in the preparation of reports and presentations for clients, providing geospatial data and analysis results for comprehensive deliverables.
  • Documents workflows and processes used in task completion, contributing to the team's knowledge base and operational efficiency.
  • Follows applicable federal, Tribal, state, local, industry, contractual, and company regulations, standards, and specifications.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
  • Communicate workload with the team to ensure that productivity goals are met and that projects are delivered on time and on budget.
  • Contribute to a collaborative work environment.

Minimum Qualifications

One year of related experience is preferred; or any equivalent combination of experience, performance, training, and/or education. Knowledge normally obtained through post-secondary education or training; bachelor's degree preferred.

Experience and qualifications for success

  • At least two (2) months of relevant industry experience required, beyond university attendance, with GPS technology, field data collection techniques, data management, and troubleshooting digital files.
  • Experience with ArcGIS Pro 3.x required as well as knowledge of cartography and computer mapping including design principles and understanding map creation procedures in ArcGIS.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, Cartography, Archaeology, Biology, Environmental Science or related field with an emphasis in GIS (or a GIS certificate) At least one (1) year of relevant professional GIS experience beyond university attendance.
  • Prior work in environmental consulting, with experience in the application of GIS to cultural or natural resources management and prior experience working with federal land agencies such as the USFS, NPS, BLM, BOR, USGS, or other, is very desirable.
  • Completed all GIS-related aspects of a project, from fieldwork preparations, to geospatial analyses, to final report maps and calculations.
  • Experience with data transfer, data analysis, data mining, and data inventory using software applications (e.g. Windows Explorer, Excel, Access, Esri ArcGIS).
  • Prior knowledge and experience creating database schemas, domains, ArcServer/web applications, network analysis, knowledge of Python, .NET, Java, PHP, HTML.

Applicants must possess a valid driver's license and meet SWCA's driver requirements. 

 

When traveling is required 

This position may require domestic travel, including travel by commercial airline. Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain all valid travel documents and identification required for work-related travel throughout the duration of employment.  

 

Safety Expectations 

Adheres to the safety program and looks out for the safety of others, promptly communicating and mitigating safety hazards.   

 

 

Work Environment 

Work is regularly performed outdoors and involves hiking over uneven terrain, lifting and carrying equipment up to 25–50 pounds, and working in varying/extreme weather conditions. Employees may be exposed to vegetation, wildlife, insects, dust, chemicals, sharp or heavy tools, and other environmental conditions while following required safety procedures. 

Pay Range

SWCA is committed to salary equity and transparency. The expected pay range for this Sheridan, WY - based position is $20.28 to $26.00 per hour. Actual pay may vary based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other factors permitted by law.
