Laboratory Director, Infectious Diseases Serology

Position Overview:
Mayo Clinic Laboratories is seeking a Laboratory Director to provide scientific, clinical, and operational leadership for Infectious Diseases Serology testing at the Southaven, Mississippi testing facility. Reporting directly to the Medical Director of the Southaven site, the Laboratory Director will oversee the development, implementation, quality management, and regulatory compliance of antibody and antigen-based testing used in the diagnosis and management of infectious diseases.

The laboratory's testing portfolio will initially focus on high-volume automated immunoassays for the detection of antibodies and antigens associated with viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic infections. The Laboratory Director will serve as a scientific and medical leader and resource for laboratory staff, healthcare providers, and institutional leadership while ensuring the delivery of high-quality, clinically relevant laboratory services.

The successful candidate will play a key role in expanding the laboratory's infectious diseases testing capabilities and supporting Mayo Clinic Laboratories' mission of advancing patient care through innovative diagnostic testing.

Primary Responsibilities

Laboratory Leadership and Oversight

• Provide scientific and technical oversight for infectious diseases serology testing performed at the Southaven facility.

• Direct the validation, verification, implementation, and ongoing performance assessment of antibody and antigen-based assays.

• Establish and maintain quality systems that ensure accurate, reliable, and timely laboratory results.

• Review and approve standard operating procedures, quality management plans, and laboratory policies.

Infectious Diseases Testing Programs

• Provide oversight of automated immunoassay platforms used for the detection of infectious disease antibodies and antigens.

• Ensure appropriate analytical and clinical performance of assays used for the diagnosis and monitoring of infectious diseases.

• Guide selection, evaluation, and implementation of new testing methods and instrumentation.

• Collaborate with laboratory operations and scientific teams to optimize test performance, workflow efficiency, and service delivery.

• Support expansion of the infectious diseases testing menu based on clinical needs and strategic priorities.

Regulatory and Quality Responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with CLIA, CAP, FDA, OSHA, and other applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements.

• Lead preparation for inspections and accreditation activities.

• Participate in proficiency testing, quality assurance, and quality improvement programs.

• Monitor quality indicators and laboratory performance metrics.

• Direct investigations of quality events and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.

Clinical Consultation and Scientific Leadership

• Provide expert consultation regarding test selection, result interpretation, assay limitations, and infectious disease diagnostics.

• Collaborate with infectious diseases physicians, clinical microbiologists, laboratory scientists, and other stakeholders to support optimal patient care.

• Participate in the development of testing algorithms and utilization guidance.

• Contribute to scientific publications, presentations, educational activities, and professional society initiatives.

• Support strategic planning and innovation efforts within Mayo Clinic Laboratories.

Personnel Development

• Partner with laboratory leadership to recruit, develop, and mentor professional and technical staff.

• Support competency assessment, continuing education, and training programs.

• Foster a culture of quality, safety, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications


Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as a laboratory director, associate director, or technical director in a clinical microbiology or infectious diseases laboratory.

- Experience overseeing high-volume automated serology testing in a reference laboratory or academic medical center setting.

- Expertise in assay validation, verification, and implementation.

- Experience with emerging infectious disease diagnostics and test development.

- Record of scholarly activity, publications, presentations, or professional leadership.
