Job Description

The Future Talent Program features internships that last up to 12 weeks and will include one or more projects. These opportunities in our Research and Develpoment Division can provide you with great development and a chance to see if we are the right company for your long-term goals.

Position Description

The Regulated Bioanalytical Sciences team is advancing laboratory digital transformation by improving how assay workflows and experimental data are captured, structured, and managed within Benchling. The successful candidate will contribute to a project focused on automating the creation of assay templates and recording aids used to document clinical sample testing and assay qualification/validation experiments.

This internship offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of scientific operations, informatics, and workflow standardization in a regulated environment. The selected candidate will collaborate with scientists and process owners to help improve efficiency, documentation consistency, reduce manual data entry, strengthen data quality, and support broader adoption of digital laboratory workflows.

Project Overview:

The intern will support a digital transformation project aimed at converting prioritized Test Method (TM) documents into standardized Benchling templates. Benchling serves as the Regulated Bioanalytical Sciences laboratory information management system used to capture, organize, and manage structured experimental workflows and data.

Activities may include reviewing Test Methods to identify workflow steps, data fields, and calculations, and translating those elements into structured Benchling templates supported by clear documentation. The project will help reduce manual template creation, improve consistency in experimental documentation, and future analytics readiness while reducing reliance on static TM documents.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Review prioritized Test Method documents to understand assay workflows, critical steps, documentation requirements, and data capture needs.

  • Translate TM content into standardized, reusable Benchling templates that support structured execution and documentation of laboratory workflows.

  • Identify key workflow steps, data fields, calculations, and repeatable template elements for digitization and standardization.

  • Support data field mapping and template design to improve consistency across methods and assays.

  • Collaborate with scientists and process owners to ensure templates accurately reflect method requirements and user needs.

  • Assist in evaluating template usability, consistency, and alignment with regulated documentation practices.

  • Develop user guidance and supporting documentation to promote template adoption.

  • Summarize project progress, challenges, efficiencies, and recommendations through written updates and presentations.

  • Present project outcomes at the end-of-summer intern symposium.

  • Comfort working with digital tools, spreadsheets, structured data, and template-based systems.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills. Strong collaboration and organizational skills.

Preferred Skills

  • Familiarity with Benchling, LIMS or other electronic laboratory notebook platforms.

  • Interest in scientific informatics, digital lab platforms, or workflow automation.

  • Experience with data structuring, template design, process mapping, or systems documentation.

  • Exposure to Python, R, SQL, or similar tools for automation, data analysis, or workflow support.

  • Understanding of laboratory workflows, assay execution, or regulated scientific documentation.

Learning Opportunities

The intern will gain exposure to:

  • Laboratory informatics and digital transformation in a regulated bioanalytical environment.

  • Benchling and electronic laboratory notebook workflows in a scientific setting.

  • Data standardization, template design, and workflow documentation
