This role in summary


Whirlpool is currently seeking qualified candidates for a Product Development Engineer at Analyst level open to join our Edgewater Technology Center Engineering and Technology organization.

You will support new product integration as well as future cost and quality projects as a Cooking Technology Subsystem Engineer. This will involve translating a project scope into an actionable development plan by creating a project schedule, performing concept generation, creating and executing test plans, releasing component and subsystem designs, and supporting implementation into a manufacturing process. On a daily basis, you will need to brainstorm design concepts to meet product requirements and then evaluate the concepts through lab testing and simulation analyses. It will be your responsibility to manage design trade-offs between performance, cost, aesthetics, and other product attributes. Trade-off management will require collaboration with a wide spectrum of process partners from other engineers to the marketing organization.  On any given day, you will have a wide variety of work that needs to be self managed and prioritized to meet project commitments.

Your responsibilities will include

  • Translate product level requirements into subsystem/module/component design criteria

  • Develop and execute design & verification of   Subsystem/Module/Components on schedule and at required cost, quality, and performance levels 

  • Own engineering release of subsystem design including component and module CAD (Computer Aided Design), Drawings, and BOMs (Bill of Materials).

  • Develop and capture knowledge required to deliver subsystem level excellence through Design Guides, FMEA (Failure Mode Effect Analysis), DVP&R (Design Verification Plan and Report), A3’s, Tolerance Stack Ups, and other documents.

  • Manage design tradeoffs between cost, aesthetics, performance, and other design attributes.

  • Align current capability of architecture/supplier/manufacturing/customer solutions to meet product attribute targets and identify solutions for projects where current capability does not align to targets.

  • Define a work plan and divide tasks/responsibilities between projects taking into account priorities, milestones and results to be achieved.

  • Demonstrate project management skills to drive projects through the design, testing, and implementation phase in a timely manner.

  • Coordinate prototype build plans to evaluate design concepts through physical lab testing.

  • Work with cross-functional team members (Engineering, Manufacturing, Procurement, Marketing, Service, etc.)

  • Participate in and lead Technical Design Previews for owned components as needed.

  • Prepare engineering change documentation.

Minimum requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering 

  • 2+ years of experience in engineering product development from concept to design release

  • 1+ years of experience with CAD and Product Life Cycle management

Preferred skills and experiences

  • Passion for problem solving and creation of reusable knowledge

  • Self-prioritization and organization with the ability to manage multiple projects

  • Self motivation and a desire to take the initiative to solve problems

  • Strong communications skills with a focus on detail, clarity, and consistency

  • Outstanding people skills - including active listening skills, negotiation skills, presentation skills. Ability to interact confidently and credibly with global customers, brand & marketing personnel, project teams, leadership teams, lab personnel and other engineering personnel

  • Desire to learn, develop and grow in your career

  • Experience/Education in Heat and Mass Transfer

  • Experience/Education in Mechanical Structures

  • Experience using Google Suite tools
