MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:


Experience:

  • Completion of a Nursing Assistant program

OR

  • Experience in an acute care or long term care setting as a Nursing Assistant (6 months at a minimum of 0.5 FTE)

OR

  • Completion of one clinical rotation in an RN or LPN program within one year.

OR

  • Experience as an Emergency Room Technician (6 months at a minimum of 0.5 FTE)

Experience or nursing assistant education must have occurred within the last five years.


Licensure/ Registration/ Certification/Other:

  • Current BLS certification (American Heart BLS for Healthcare Providers) required. Demonstrates at the time of employment and every two years thereafter, competency in Basic Life Support.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities of routine principles and practices of patient care.

  • Knowledge of aseptic technique.

  • Proficient in reading, writing and communicating in English.

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

  • Ability to properly lift 50 pounds.

  • Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with patients, visitors, and co-workers.

  • Ability to work across teams and be flexible with changing needs of patient cases.

  • Critical thinking skills

Six months experience in a health care setting.

Hospital experience strongly desired.

Licensure/ Registration/ Certification:

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certificate required for all new hires.

POSITION SUMMARY STATEMENT:

This position provides care assistance for the Pre-Surgical Care Unit (PSCU), Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Surgical Transitional Care Unit (STCU) and the Extended Surgical Care Unit (SDEX). Under the direction and supervision of the Charge Nurse, Nurse Supervisor and Nurse Manager, the Surgical Care Assistant will assist in the nursing care to the divergent populations of newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients with multiple medical problems.


MAJOR JOB DUTIES AND TASKS:

Performs delegated patient care functions, safely, effectively, timely and efficiently, based on the age specific needs of the patient populations served including, but not limited to:

  1. Assists the nurse with patient admission, transfer and discharge on a consistent basis.


  1. Performs activities including bathing, positioning, and assisting with transfers including transports on a daily basis. Transports patients safely and with appropriate equipment.


  1. Assists patients to the bathroom on a daily basis.


  1. Rooms patients pre-operatively and assists with discharge to home including transporting patients to their vehicle.


  1. Wipes down equipment and carts in patient rooms and sets up rooms for next patient. Wipes down surgical carts after each use and remakes them for next patient. Wipes down and restocks isolation carts after each use.


  1. Collects patient data including vital signs and weights consistently and accurately.

  2. Operates patient care equipment (e.g. carts, beds, lifts) safely.

  3. Completes work using proper infection control practices and use of personal protective equipment.

  4. Removes and reports defective equipment promptly.

  5. Performs point of care testing as needed.

  6. Responds to patients call lights and requests promptly.


  1. Implements delegated aspects of the patient’s plan of care consistently and accurately.


  1. Adjusts assignment to accommodate needs of patients.

  2. Assists physicians and nurses with procedures as requested.

  3. Works cooperatively with members of other departments (i.e. transport, laboratory, etc.) to provide optimal patient care.

  4. Assists with maintenance of environment to ensure clean and orderly patient care unit (e.g. stripping of dirty units, assisting with disposal of trash/soiled linen/used equipment, stocking supplies).


  1. Consistently reports pertinent information including any changes in the patient's condition and signs of abuse to the nurse

  2. Documents accurately, completely and timely and in accordance with departmental policies.

  • BLS

  • Clips hair and performs surgical scrubs

  • Transportation of patients from one location to another within the hospital and discharging outside to vehicle

  • Stocking necessary supplies

  • Takes supplies to and from various locations

  • Answers phones

  • Prepares patient for surgery (e.g. helping to undress, secures patients belongings etc.)

  • Maintains a safe, clean and

orderly patient area

  • Assists with ambulation and lifting patients
