Job Summary

The Childcare Worker is responsible for providing safe, caring, and dependable supervision of children while parents and guardians participate in Mass, parish programs, meetings, or other church activities. This position creates a welcoming and nurturing environment for children by providing age-appropriate activities, maintaining a clean and safe space, and responding appropriately to children's individual needs. The Childcare Worker supports the mission and values of the Catholic Church and follows all parish and diocesan policies regarding child safety and protection.

Job Responsibilities

  • Child Supervision: Assist with supervising children and ensure they remain safe, engaged, and appropriately monitored at all times.

  • Activity Support: Assist with age-appropriate games, crafts, stories, play, and other activities that encourage positive interaction and participation.

  • Child Care Assistance: Help meet children's basic needs in an attentive, patient, and caring manner while following established parish procedures.

  • Classroom/Room Management: Help maintain an organized, clean, and welcoming childcare environment. Assist with setup and cleanup before and after childcare sessions.

  • Behavior Support: Encourage positive behavior and assist the lead childcare worker with maintaining appropriate classroom expectations.

  • Safety and Security: Follow all parish and diocesan child protection, health, safety, emergency, and supervision procedures.

  • Parent/Guardian Assistance: Help greet parents and guardians and assist with established child check-in and check-out procedures.

  • Incident Reporting: Immediately report injuries, accidents, behavioral concerns, or other incidents to the Childcare Worker or designated parish staff member.

  • Teamwork: Work cooperatively with childcare staff, parish employees, volunteers, clergy, parents, and guardians to provide quality care.

  • Confidentiality: Respect the privacy of children and families and maintain confidentiality regarding personal or family information.

  • Catholic Environment: Support a positive, respectful, and welcoming environment that reflects the values and mission of the Catholic Church.

  • Other Duties: Perform other related childcare and parish support duties as assigned by the Pastor, Parish Administrator, Childcare Coordinator, or designated supervisor.

Job Requirements

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred; students or individuals with relevant childcare experience may be considered.

  • Experience: Previous experience working with children in a childcare, school, church, camp, or volunteer setting preferred.

  • Skills:

    • Patient, caring, dependable, and attentive.
    • Ability to interact positively with children of varying ages.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to follow directions and work effectively as part of a team.
    • Ability to maintain a clean, safe, and organized environment.
    • Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries and confidentiality.
  • Faith and Community: Respect for the Catholic faith and willingness to support the mission, values, and ministries of the parish.

  • Child Safety Requirements: Must successfully complete all required parish and diocesan background checks, safe-environment training, child protection training, and other requirements for working with minors.

  • Physical Requirements: Ability to actively interact with and supervise children, including standing, walking, bending, sitting, and assisting children as appropriate.
