JOB SUMMARY

Under regular supervision, performs the custodial maintenance of Parks and Recreation facilities to ensure a clean and safe environment for staff and visitors. Work involves recording and verifying supplies, restocking supplies in facility areas, sweeping and mopping floors, and disinfecting and wiping sinks and toilets. Performs other related duties as needed or assigned.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Records stock amounts of supplies such as toilet paper, soap, hand towels to verify adequate supplies in various facilities.
  • Cleans and sanitizes restroom facilities and fixtures including sinks, urinals and toilets; washes windows, mirrors, and walls; cleans and sanitizes showers as assigned; and replenishes supplies in restroom.
  • Removes litter and debris around Parks and Recreation facilities.
  • Sweeps, mops, dusts, and cleans floors; strips, waxes, and buffs floors as necessary.
  • Vacuums carpeted areas; shampoos carpet when needed.
  • Dusts and polishes furniture, woodwork, fixtures, and equipment; cleans countertops.
  • Empties, cleans, and sanitizes waste receptacles; picks up papers and other debris.
  • Inspects and cleans break rooms, classrooms, meeting spaces; waters inside plants.
  • Replaces light bulbs; replaces air conditioner filters; and cleans air vents.
  • Performs some building maintenance duties as required or assigned.
  • Receives and/or reviews various forms, reports, correspondence, policies, directories, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; and completes, processes, forwards, or retains as appropriate.
  • Prepares and/or processes a variety of documentation associated with department operations. 
  • Refers to policy and procedure manuals, codes/laws/regulations, reference texts, etc.
  • Operates truck and various janitorial equipment (such as buffing machines, floor sweepers, and vacuum cleaners.).
  • Uses a variety of tools (such as hand drill, crescent wrench, reciprocating saw, vise grip pliers, channel lock pliers, etc.).; a variety of supplies (such as garbage can liners, buffing pads, toilet tissue, hand towels, soap, disinfectant, janitorial supplies, general office supplies, etc.).
  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals (such as Town Administrator, Assistant Town Administrator, Purchasing Agent, other Town employees, vendors, contractors, and the general public.).
  • Cleans glass and windows.
  • Assists in moving furniture, supplies, etc. as requested.
  • Moves and arranges furniture and equipment; sets up rooms for conferences and meetings.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent supplemented by at least six months’ experience in custodial tasks; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.  

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the methods, policies, and procedures of the Administration Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Custodian. 
  • Knowledge of departmental methods and activities as they pertain to the specific duties of position. 
  • Knowledge of how to perform routine duties required in the maintenance of cleanliness of public building and grounds.   
  • Knowledge and skill in using various supplies and cleaning products.
  • Knowledge of how to operate and maintain various tools and equipment used in the completion of specified duties.   
  • Knowledge of the various chemicals used on the job and is able to utilize such in a safe and effective manner.
  • Knowledge of how to complete daily activities in a timely manner as prescribed. 
  • Ability to use independent judgment in routine situations. 
  • Ability to maintain an organized and clean work area in order to promote safe and efficient operations. 
  • Ability to organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities.
  • Ability to follow oral instructions and assume responsibility for the completion of assignments.  
  • Ability to read and interpret various materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job.  
  • Ability to prepare simple records with accuracy and in a timely manner. 
  • Ability to communicate and coordinate in an effective manner with supervisors and staff members. 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle as well as a variety of types of equipment including buffers, mops, vacuums, carpet shampooers, mechanical tools, and buckets with wringers.  Must be physically able to exert up to twenty-five pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to ten pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.   Physical demands are in excess of sedentary work; work requires constant standing, walking, fingering, feeling, reaching, stooping, etc.
