Education

Bachelor’s degree (B.S. or B.A.) in Finance, Business, Economics, or a related field preferred. Specialized banking or commercial lending education and training preferred

Experience

Minimum of five (5) years of experience in business lending, commercial banking, or related office/management roles

Role and Responsibilities

The Commercial Loan Officer is responsible for developing and managing commercial loan relationships, achieving customer service and production goals established in the Commercial Services Department’s annual operating plan, maintaining appropriate documentation and records, and actively participating in community activities that reflect favorably on the Bank.

Essential Duties 

Develops and manages the Bank’s commercial and industrial loan relationships, which are typically the largest and most complex, by performing the following:

  • Jointly establishes annual quantitative sales and customer service objectives with the assigned supervisor, aligned with the Commercial Services Department’s marketing and operating plans.
  • Solicits new business from existing and prospective customers; interviews loan applicants; and maintains ongoing client relationships to identify cross‑selling opportunities.
  • Provides timely sales and activity information for inclusion in customer service and sales performance reports.
  • Monitors individual sales performance against established objectives and regularly reviews results with the assigned supervisor.
  • Serves as an active member of the Bank’s sales team and participates in joint or group sales calls as appropriate.
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of all commercial banking products and services to effectively identify customer needs and recommend appropriate solutions.
  • Collects and analyzes financial, credit, and related information; structures and negotiates loan terms; approves or declines loan applications within individual lending authority; and provides direct service to commercial customers relating to loans, deposits, and related services.
  • Prepares and presents loan requests to the appropriate loan committee.
  • Assists customers in obtaining specialized services from other Bank departments and resolves customer inquiries or service issues.
  • Maintains working knowledge of Bank operating policies and procedures impacting commercial lending, including loan policy.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate records of customer contacts, meetings, loan activity, and assigned reports.
  • Monitors loan repayment activity and portfolio performance.
  • Complies with all established operating policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements to ensure effective risk management, safety, and soundness, including CRA, BSA, ECOA, and other applicable regulations.
  • Coordinates tasks with coworkers across departments to ensure efficient operations and proper segregation of duties.
  • Reports pertinent information to management as requested or according to established reporting schedules.
  • Responds to internal and external inquiries in a timely manner and in accordance with Bank policy.
  • Provides leadership, on‑the‑job training, and technical guidance to Commercial Lenders as assigned.
  • Actively participates in community and business development activities that reflect favorably on the Bank.

Ancillary Duties

  • Attend sales, trade, and community meetings to develop new business opportunities.

  • Performs tasks which are supportive in nature to the essential functions of the job, but which may be altered or re-designed depending upon individual or departmental circumstances.

Physical Requirements:

  • Occasionally ascends/descends stairs to move through the different floors of the location.
  • Occasionally positions self to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces.
  • Occasionally remains in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to accomplish tasks.
  • Must be able to assess the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.
  • Occasionally has to work around noisy environments.
