About the opportunity

The University of Sydney is welcoming applications for an experienced and motivated Building Quality Inspector to join the Infrastructure Delivery team.

The Building Quality Inspector (BQI) plays a critical role in the successful delivery of major infrastructure projects at the University of Sydney. Acting as the University’s on-site representative, the BQI provides independent oversight of construction activities to ensure the highest standards of quality, safety, and compliance are maintained throughout project delivery.

The role is responsible for monitoring construction works against approved designs, specifications, relevant standards, and regulatory requirements. Through rigorous inspections, documentation, and reporting, the BQI identifies and addresses potential issues early, minimises defects and rework, protects project integrity, and supports the delivery of high-quality outcomes that provide long-term value for the University.

The Building Quality Inspector (BQI) will work closely with project teams, contractors, and key stakeholders to ensure construction activities are delivered safely, efficiently, and to the required standards of quality and compliance.

The successful candidate will be based on-site and responsible for overseeing construction projects across the University of Sydney’s Darlington and Camperdown campuses.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

• conduct daily inspections of construction activities to ensure compliance with design specifications, engineering drawings, and quality standards

• monitor the quality of workmanship and materials used, identifying any deviations or substandard practices

• verify that all construction activities comply with relevant building codes, statutory regulations, and University policies

• conduct safety inspections and identify potential hazards, unsafe practices, or non-compliant equipment.

• detect and document construction defects or poor workmanship early in the process to prevent rework and delays

• provide clear, concise, and timely updates to the Project Director to support informed decision-making

• review construction drawings, specifications, and technical documents to ensure clarity and feasibility

• engage with contractors to understand their three-week look-ahead schedules and prepare for upcoming inspections.

About you

• accredited/licensed building trade qualification or an equivalent combination of relevant training and experience

• minimum 20 years of relevant experience in building construction, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance

• proven track record in site inspection, defect identification, and construction oversight

• experience working with diverse trades on complex infrastructure projects in major-level health, research or education buildings

• working knowledge of WHS responsibilities and risk management, obligations and applying SafeWork NSW legislation & regulation into the workplace

• extensive knowledge of regulatory requirements in the building industry (including NSW Legislation, BCA, Australian Standards) as well as technical knowledge of professional disciplines

• effective communication skills (both verbal and written) with ability to interact, influence and negotiate with a broad range of people

• within and outside the University with a high level of tact, diplomacy, and discretion, including the ability to manage people who may be in distress or difficulty

• deep understanding of construction inspection processes and quality assurance.
