Summary

Responsible for supervising the daily operations of the Core Laboratory to ensure high-quality, efficient, and compliant laboratory services. Provides leadership and support to laboratory personnel through staffing coordination, technical oversight, quality management, staff development, and workflow optimization.

 

Position Reports To: Laboratory Manager


Essential Functions

  1. Direct and coordinate daily laboratory operations to ensure timely, accurate, and efficient testing services.
  2. Lead, mentor, and support laboratory personnel while ensuring compliance with regulatory, quality, and safety standards.
  3. Provide technical oversight, problem resolution, and continuous improvement initiatives to maintain the accuracy and integrity of patient testing.
  4. Monitor workflow, turnaround times, staffing levels, pending worklists, and specimen collection/processing activities.
  5. Ensure appropriate allocation of personnel and resources to maintain efficient operations.
  6. Escalate issues requiring MLS technical consultants, pathologist, or management involvement as appropriate.
  7. Oversee quality control, proficiency testing, instrument maintenance, and documentation activities.
  8. Promote accountability, teamwork, communication, and adherence to organizational standards.
  9. Ensure accurate, reliable, and timely reporting of patient results.
  10. Assist with staffing plans, daily assignments, breaks, meal coverage, and schedule adjustments.
  11. Ensure compliance with laboratory safety policies and infection prevention practices.
  12. Identify and implement process improvement opportunities.
  13. Assists the Laboratory Manager or Laboratory Director in the coordination of bi-annual and mid cycle CAP inspections and responds to identified deficiencies to ensure continued accreditation.
  14. Participate in departmental meetings, committees, and organizational initiatives.
  15. Collaborate with providers, nursing, ancillary departments, technical consultants, and laboratory leadership.
  16. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Associate Degree or Bachelor’s Degree Medical Laboratory Science.
  • Four years of clinical laboratory experience.
  • Certification of MLT (ASCP), MLS (ASCP), MT (ASCP), or equivalent.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Desired:

  • 2 years lead or supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of SoftLab and Epic.

Working Conditions:

  • Frequent interruptions are to be expected by telephone calls and ongoing employee needs. Stress and pressure are a regular part of the work environment; project deadlines are to be expected. The Lab Supervisor must learn to work closely with the Lab Director, Lab Manager, staff pathologists, the lab staff and the other Confluence Health Managers and Supervisors.
