SMP Automotive Systems Alabama Inc. – Cottondale, AL

Are you an experienced maintenance professional with a passion for troubleshooting and keeping automated equipment running at peak performance? SMP Automotive Systems Alabama is seeking a Paint Maintenance Technician to support our automotive paint operations. In this hands-on role, you'll perform preventative maintenance, diagnose equipment issues, and help ensure the safe, reliable operation of our paint systems.

What You'll Do

  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on paint shop equipment and support systems.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and automated equipment.
  • Maintain paint booths, ovens, conveyors, robots, pumps, mixers, and material delivery systems.
  • Diagnose equipment failures and complete repairs to minimize downtime.
  • Support production by responding quickly to equipment breakdowns.
  • Perform inspections and maintain preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and technical manuals.
  • Assist with installation, modification, and improvement of manufacturing equipment.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and work orders.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to improve equipment reliability and efficiency.
  • Follow all safety, environmental, and company policies while performing maintenance activities.
  • Work collaboratively with Production, Engineering, Quality, and other departments.

What We're Looking For

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Technical degree or industrial maintenance certification preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of industrial maintenance experience, preferably in an automotive paint environment.
  • Experience troubleshooting PLC-controlled equipment is preferred.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems (120V–480V), motors, sensors, drives, and control systems.
  • Experience with pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with paint application equipment, pumps, ovens, conveyors, and robotic systems is highly desirable.
  • Ability to read electrical and mechanical drawings.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness to work overtime, weekends, or off-shifts as needed.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and lift throughout the shift.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.
  • Work in a manufacturing environment with varying temperatures, noise, and exposure to paint shop equipment and chemicals.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators when required.
