Phlebotomist

Vero Beach, VA


Position Duties and Responsibilities

  • Follow Universal Blood and Body Fluid Precautions at all times.
  • Lift supplies of up to 30 pounds. Inform the Laboratory Supply Petty Officer of material requirements, research and/or evaluate new or improved phlebotomy devices.
  • Use an automated Laboratory Information System for entering patient demographics, tests requested, generating labels, and querying for completed results. 
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and medical staff.
  • Schedule appointments as necessary.
  • Complete work according to industry and safety protocols; follow detailed oral and written directions, precautions, and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as directed by supervisor(s) and needs of the department such as answering the phones, greeting and processing lab patients. 

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school equivalent and completion of NAACLS or two-part Phlebotomy program.
  • A current certification and registration as a Phlebotomy Technician from the American Society of Clinical Pathology (PBT-ASCP) or the American Medical Technologists (RPT-AMT).
  • Must have performed 40 hours of classroom training, 100 hours of clinical training and 10 successful venipuncture (including skin punctures).
  • Minimum of one year of experience as a Phlebotomy Technician after graduation. 
  • Staff shall complete VA mandatory training as requested and complete ACLS/BLS training and keep ACLS/BLS certifications current throughout the life of the contract. Certification refers to the successful completion of an American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network (MTN) approved BLS or ACLS course. The AHA and MTN are the only programs acceptable by VA for obtaining required certification.
  • Must be a US Citizen.
