Senior Staff Engineer – Structural

French & Parrello Associates (FPA) is seeking a motivated and talented Senior Staff Engineer to join our growing Structural Engineering Department at our headquarters in Newark, NJ. The successful candidate will have experience analyzing and designing a variety of structural systems. As part of multidisciplinary project teams, this individual will prepare calculations and construction documents, coordinate designs across disciplines, and support construction-phase activities, field observations, and quality-control reviews.

This role offers the opportunity to expand technical expertise and judgment while gradually taking on greater responsibility for assigned work. Working closely with experienced engineers and project managers, the Senior Staff Engineer will also gain experience supporting project coordination and technical deliverables.

Responsibilities

• Perform structural analysis and design for building systems including steel, concrete, masonry, and wood structures.

• Prepare structural calculations, technical reports, and supporting design documentation.

• Assist with the preparation of construction documents including drawings, specifications, and details.

• Coordinate structural design with other internal disciplines including civil, mechanical, electrical, and architecture.

• Review shop drawings and respond to RFIs during construction.

• Assist with field observations and site visits to evaluate existing structures and construction progress.

• Support project managers with scheduling, coordination, and technical deliverables.

• Ensure designs meet applicable building codes, standards, and industry best practices.

• Participate in internal design reviews and quality control processes.


Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with a Structural focus or Structural Engineering.

• 2–4 years of structural design experience, preferably within a consulting engineering environment.

• Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or ability to obtain within 6 months.

• Working knowledge of structural design software such as RAM, RISA, ETABS, SAP2000, or similar analysis programs.

• Experience with AutoCAD and/or Revit preferred.

• Familiarity with IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, ACI, and other applicable design codes.

• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

• Willingness to travel to project sites to perform construction inspections and structural field observations in New Jersey and New York.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.


Nice to Have Skills & Experience


• Master’s Degree in Structural Engineering

• ICC Special Inspector certification or ACI Concret Field Testing Technician Grade I certification, or the ability to obtain within one year of hire

Compensation

The projected compensation range for this position is $75,000 to $90,000. Actual compensation will depend on factors including experience, education, qualifications, and skill set. FPA recognizes and rewards performance through an annual bonus program.
