We are seeking an experienced Collections & Recovery Attorney to lead the legal collection and recovery efforts for our consumer, real estate, commercial lending, and negative share account portfolios. This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact while collaborating with a dedicated team committed to member service, compliance, and operational excellence. Position Summary The Collections & Recovery Attorney develops and executes legal strategies to maximize recoveries and minimize losses. This position is responsible for managing litigation, bankruptcy, probate, foreclosure, repossession, and related collection matters while ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. Key Responsibilities Litigation & Recovery Management Manage legal matters involving consumer, residential mortgage, and commercial loan collections. Prepare, file, and oversee collection actions, including complaints, judgments, garnishments, and cognovit actions. Negotiate settlements and resolutions with debtors and opposing counsel. Represent the Credit Union in hearings, trials, bankruptcy proceedings, and other court matters. Leadership & Collaboration Provide guidance and support to Legal Administrative Assistants, Recovery Specialists, and Bankruptcy/Probate Specialists. Partner with Lending, Finance, Servicing, Operations, and other departments to support organizational goals. Assist with training initiatives and promote compliance with internal policies and applicable laws. Compliance & Risk Management Ensure collection and recovery activities comply with federal and state laws, regulations, court rules, and procedures. Monitor legal developments affecting creditors' rights and debt collection practices. Identify and mitigate legal and operational risks. Help develop and maintain policies and procedures that protect the Credit Union’s interests. Process Improvement & Reporting Review recovery processes and recommend efficiencies that improve performance and consistency. Prepare reports on recovery results, trends, metrics, and process improvements. Active license to practice law in the State of Ohio. Admission to practice before the United States District Court and United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Ohio, or the ability to obtain admission promptly after hire. Required Experience 3-5 years of experience representing creditors in: Debt collection Foreclosure matters Bankruptcy proceedings Related litigation Experience managing legal caseloads and legal processes. Experience supervising or mentoring legal support staff preferred. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Strong understanding of: Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) CFPB requirements and related creditor regulations Experience representing creditors in state and federal courts. Excellent legal research, writing, negotiation, and advocacy skills. Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities. Ability to balance multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail. Commitment to professionalism, confidentiality, and exceptional service.
