Job Summary

We are currently seeking a Chemist. This position is a full-time opportunity located in Washington, DC.

 

Joining a dynamic, multidisciplinary team, you will provide critical support to a large government contract by performing applied laboratory research across a diverse range of chemical and biological disciplines. As a senior laboratory professional, you will be responsible for maintaining the laboratory in a continuous state of operational readiness, training and mentoring laboratory staff, supporting day-to-day execution of analytical activities, and ensuring procedures are followed correctly.

 

You will support troubleshooting and technical problem-solving, prepare draft technical reports and supporting documentation, and sustain workflow continuity, equipment readiness, and adherence to quality and safety requirements in a mission-driven laboratory environment. Please note this position is contingent upon contract award.

Responsibilities

As a Chemist, the selected individual will serve as a senior laboratory professional supporting analytical chemistry operations across chemical and biological disciplines. Responsibilities may include:

 

  • Apply expertise in chemistry and biochemistry to independently design, adapt, and execute laboratory-based experiments for sample analysis and characterization, both independently and with small laboratory teams
  • Develop new and novel chemical analysis techniques independently or with minimal guidance
  • Select and adapt technical approaches and solutions for complex assignments with minimal oversight
  • Identify gaps in the current state of the art and suggest improvements to methods and workflows
  • Mentor and train laboratory personnel to ensure procedures are followed correctly and quality standards are maintained
  • Independently troubleshoot issues with test methods and equipment with guidance from the shift lead
  • Work independently to meet study objectives and deliverables with guidance from senior scientists
  • Analyze and interpret data and assist in the preparation of technical reports, manuscripts, and presentations
  • Participate in identifying business opportunities and support the development of proposals, white papers, and marketing plans
  • Follow established safety guidelines when working with hazardous chemicals and infectious (RG2) materials

Key Qualifications

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, Physical Science, or a related field, and at least two years of relevant laboratory work experience in scientific investigation, analytical chemistry, and contamination control
  • Expertise in designing and executing experiments rooted in chemistry and biochemistry disciplines
  • Proficiency with applicable open-source software tools and analytical chemistry laboratory equipment
  • Proven ability to conduct experiments according to Standard Operating Procedures in a regulated environment such as ISO 17025
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and train less experienced laboratory staff
  • Sufficiently medically fit to perform assigned laboratory duties, including the ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), lift up to 25 pounds, and work in proximity to hazardous and infectious materials
  • Some domestic travel is possible but not anticipated
  • This position requires a Secret security clearance. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen and currently hold or be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance as a condition of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working within laboratory quality management systems (e.g., ISO 9001, ISO 17025, GLP)
  • Active or previously held government security clearance

Compensation Data

Battelle is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The salary range for this role is $80,000 – $113,000 per year, in addition to our comprehensive benefits package. A candidate's salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to education, relevant work experience, skills, and certifications. Salary ranges may vary based on geographic location and market conditions.
