JOB SUMMARY:  The Dental Hygienist reviews a patient’s medical and dental history and chief complaints, assesses dental and periodontal status, and provides preventive and therapeutic service. The position ensures that all services are discussed with the patient before they are performed. 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: 
  • Ensure good communication with patients in the delivery of dental care.
  • Perform clinical evaluation of patients:
       a. Perform periodontal assessment, including charting and accretions.       b. Evaluate dental needs of patient with use of radiographs and examination.       c. Conduct extraoral and intraoral exam, periodontal charting, oral cancer screening and temporal mandibular disorder evaluation.        d. Make appropriate referrals for dental/periodontal needs. 
  • Perform clinical treatment:
       a. Prophylaxis       b. Scaling and root planning       c. Fluoride treatment       d. Sealants       e. Desensitization
  • Present and sign dental treatment to patients.
  • Provide oral hygiene instructions and oral health care education to patients.
  • Supervise dental hygiene students and evaluate clinical performance.
  • Conduct oral surveys and studies using dental indices.
  • Administer local anesthesia to manage and alleviate dental pain and anxiety.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduate of an accredited dental hygiene program.
  • Registered dental hygiene license in DC.
  • Possess appropriate state hygiene license and malpractice insurance.
  • Experience working with the Latino Community.

SKILLS and COMPETENCIES:

  • Bilingual: English Spanish.
  • Verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team. 

Work Schedule:  20 hours per week.   Monday and Thursday from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  Tuesday or Wednesday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm
