Registered Veterinary Technician

The Registered Veterinary Technician provides high-quality, compassionate care to patients while supporting veterinarians in medical, surgical, and dental procedures. This is a full-time, credentialed position requiring strong clinical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively with clients and team members in a fast-paced environment. The Registered Veterinary Technician reports directly to the Head Veterinary Technician and works under the direction and supervision of the attending veterinarians.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care & Clinical Duties

  • Provide compassionate care to patients and clients at all times.
  • Perform physical assessments and accurately record observations in ezyVet.
  • Safely and effectively restrain pets, including large or difficult animals.
  • Administer subcutaneous (SQ), intramuscular (IM), and intravenous (IV) injections.
  • Place and maintain IV catheters; operate and monitor IV pumps.
  • Assist veterinarians during medical, surgical, and dental procedures.
  • Prepare patients for surgery, induce and monitor anesthesia under veterinarian direction, and monitor patients during procedures and recovery.
  • Perform full dental prophylaxis, including dental radiographs.
  • Conduct emergency procedures such as hemorrhage control, CPR, airway management, and oxygen therapy.
  • Prepare patients and equipment for ultrasound procedures.
  • Position patients and take diagnostic radiographs in accordance with radiation safety protocols.
  • Perform electrocardiograms (ECGs).

Laboratory & Diagnostic Procedures

  • Conduct laboratory tests including fecal exams, heartworm tests, skin scrapings, urinalysis, and fungal cultures.
  • Collect blood samples for analysis.
  • Perform in-house diagnostics with laboratory machines.
  • Maintain accurate lab records and ensure results are properly documented in the patient record in ezyVet.

Client Communication & Education

  • Communicate clearly and professionally with clients regarding patient care.
  • Explain vaccination protocols, medications, and treatment plans.
  • Discuss prescription drug usage, dosages, and potential side effects.
  • Provide discharge instructions and home care guidance.
  • Address client questions confidently and refer to veterinarians when appropriate.
  • Prepare treatment estimates and discuss financial responsibilities in alignment with hospital policies.

Facility & Inventory Management

  • Maintain clean, organized exam rooms, treatment areas, and surgical suites.
  • Ensure surgical materials and operating rooms are properly stocked and prepared.
  • Monitor and maintain inventory of medical supplies according to hospital systems.
  • Uphold hospital cleanliness and sanitation standards at all times.
  • Handle and document controlled substances in compliance with DEA and NC requirements.

Administrative & Recordkeeping

  • Maintain accurate, timely, and complete medical records in ezyVet in compliance with hospital policies and North Carolina Veterinary Medical Board requirements.
  • Admit and discharge patients according to established procedures and veterinarian instructions.

Teamwork & Professional Conduct

  • Maintain a positive, cooperative relationship with team members.
  • Conduct oneself in a confident and professional manner, even under stress.
  • Take direction from the Head Veterinary Technician and attending veterinarians and escalate concerns through the appropriate chain of command.
  • Participate in team-building activities, community outreach, and educational events 2–3 times per year.

Qualifications

Required

  • Current registration as a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) with the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Board, or eligibility to obtain North Carolina registration prior to start date.
  • Graduation from an AVMA-CVTEA accredited veterinary technology program and a passing score on the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE).
  • Strong knowledge of animal health, diseases, and treatment protocols.
  • Proficiency in anesthesia monitoring, radiology, and laboratory procedures.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to multitask and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred

  • Prior experience in a general or emergency veterinary practice.
  • Experience with ezyVet practice management software.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs unassisted, and more with assistance.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and kneel for extended periods throughout a shift.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to perform clinical and laboratory tasks.
  • Ability to safely restrain animals of varying size and temperament.

Work Environment

  • Fast-paced veterinary hospital or clinic setting.
  • Exposure to animals of varying temperaments and medical conditions, including potential bites and scratches.
  • Exposure to anesthetic gases, radiation, and controlled substances, managed through established safety protocols.
  • Requires physical stamina, including lifting, restraining animals, and standing for extended periods.
