Work involves inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining harvesters, trucks, trailers, and other equipment in a safe and efficient manner. Work is performed under minimal supervision with moderate latitude in the use of initiative. Position relies on experience and exercises some independent judgement to determine the best approach by using and interpreting policies and procedures. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The essential functions in this job description are intended only as an illustration of the various types of duties that may be performed. Performs MIG, TIG, Stick, and Flux-Core welding on carbon steel, stainless steel, and specialty alloys Lays out, cuts, fits, and assembles components using plasma cutters, torches, saws, and machining tool Performs complex structural repairs on tractors, loaders, trucks, cane carts, and harvesting machinery Maintains, troubleshoots, and performs complex repairs on tractors, sugar cane harvest equipment and any other equipment in the Agriculture Department’s field and shop operations Safely and correctly repairs harvest equipment including cane elevators and harvesters, tractors, air compressors, and any equipment utilized in support of agriculture Regularly assesses completed tasks and ongoing projects to verify adherence to established procedures and work order specifications Dismantles defective machines for repair Records details and parts used on repair work orders Reassembles machines and equipment following repair; tests operation and adjusts as necessary Tests and replaces electrical components and wiring, using test meters, soldering equipment, and hand tools Visually identifies leaking, loose, worn, broken, and dirty components on agricultural operations and industrial equipment including tractors, air compressors, and other support equipment Inspects and diagnosis equipment failure and timed repairs; oversees the operation of numerous lifting devices to include proper rigging procedures Performs tasks such as flame cutting, bending, forming, beveling, and metal notching working from prints, drawings, and verbal instructions; performs all work within Standard Repair Times (SRTs) Performs standard layouts and set-ups of dimensions and tolerances Utilizes standard shop hand tools, measuring devices, and equipment Performs other maintenance-related work as required Works collaboratively with other team members and supervisors to achieve project goals Ensures the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times Follows organizational and public safety guidelines and protocols, performs job functions in a safe manner, and reports all safety hazards per established policies and procedures SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: May train, coordinate, provide guidance to and review the work of lower-level staff to accomplish operational plans and results MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or GED and four (4) years of mechanical experience in maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of agricultural equipment, including some previous lead-worker responsibility or demonstrated ability to lead the work of others; OR a combination of experience, certification, education and training that demonstrates expertise in the related areas. CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES OR SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Must possess and maintain a regular Class E Driver’s License Must possess and maintain American Welding Society welding certification Must have own set of tools PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bilingual – English and Spanish KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of heavy equipment mechanics Thorough knowledge of safety protocols and compliance standards related to equipment operation Skill in the use of applicable department and organization specific software; ability to learn and become proficient in the use of other specialized software as may be required Skill in all aspects of SMAW(stick), GMAW(MIG), and GTAW(TIG) welding, oxyacetylene welding and cutting, and air carbon arc cutting Skill in using mathematics required for the work Ability to plan, assign, and guide the work of assigned staff Ability to read manuals, blueprints, schematics, and diagrams Ability to troubleshoot and repair equipment Ability to repair, fabricate, hardface, and assemble complete structures or components of equipment following industry accepted standards Ability to accurately use metal forming, cutting, grinding, and shaping tools such as presses, punches, brakes, pipe benders, threaders, optical tracing tables, grinders, and drills, in order to bend, shape, and cut parts to be welded, bolted, screwed or riveted together Ability to work in hot, cold, wet, humid, dusty, and foggy working conditions depending on weather Ability to adapt quickly to a multicultural environment Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines Ability to follow instructions from supervisors and senior workers Ability to work cooperatively as a member of a service-oriented team Ability to clearly communicate and understand information in English, orally and in writing Ability to follow public safety guidelines and protocols and perform job functions in a safe manner Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those interacted with during work regardless of race, color, religious creed, national origin, ancestry, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, genetic information, disability, political affiliation, military service, or diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds Ability to maintain regular attendance to ensure efficient and effective performance of job duties AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT (ADA) REQUIREMENTS: Depending on functional area of assignment, tasks involve the periodic performance of moderately physically demanding work, usually involving lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (up to 50 pounds). Tasks may involve some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Tasks are regularly performed inside and/or outside with exposure to adverse environmental conditions (e.g., dirt, cold, rain, fumes). Some tasks require manual dexterity, in addition to visual and hearing acuity. Some tasks may involve identifying and distinguishing colors. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate visual cues or signals.
