Safety Specialist III

General Description: 

Under minimal supervision, the Safety Specialist III supports safety, quality and environmental program requirements across all company operations, provides for the health and safety of all Spaceport employees and visitors to the Spaceport facilities, and ensures compliance with all federal and state occupational safety and health requirements. This role is responsible for driving regulatory compliance, reducing risk, and advancing internal and customer driven safety culture through proactive engagement, assessment, and incident management.

Responsibilities and Duties:

1. Works with management and employees to promote a strong and effective safety, quality, and environmental culture

1. Monitors ongoing operations to ensure SQE standards/requirements are upheld

1. Understand and oversee hazardous operations 

1. Manage safety assets and completes regulatory inspections

1. Understand and apply technical knowledge base of safety and industrial hygiene regulations, concepts, practices, and principles    

1. Anticipate and recognize hazards, evaluate exposures, and offer control methods to protect employees from risks                                                                                                                         
2. Assist in the development of processes to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements applied to company and contracted operations.  

1. Report and investigate incidents as applicable 

1. Identifies risks associated with the safety/health of the facilities or properties of the Authority; escalates concerns to Safety Program Manager.

1. Work Instruction Reviews and closure

1. Mission Assurance

• Mission related briefings

• Hazard area identification 

1. Assists the Environmental Program Manager and Safety Program Manager as applicable 

1. Hazardous waste management / HAZCOM

1. Generates required written and oral reports as requested by supervisor.

• Convey information and ideas clearly 

1. Listen to, comprehend, and clarify concerns and issues raised by colleagues, customers

1. Periodic surveillance audits of high-risk areas

1. Generates required written and oral reports as requested by supervisor.

1. Other duties as assigned within program area.   

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

General Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent

Job-Related Experience: 

Minimum one year in related field and/or six months experience in a Safety, Quality, or Environmental role.

Prior experience in the military or aerospace industry is highly valued.

Certifications: Must be able to obtain or possess the OSHA 30 Certification within 90 days of hire.

Licenses, etc.: Valid driver's license is necessary when operating a vehicle while on agency business.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Knowledge:

• Safety Data (SDS)
• Personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Fall protection equipment
• Lockout/tagout
• Confined space regulations
• Lifting Devices and Equipment
• Electrical Meter usage; Multi-meter, Voltmeter, and Ohms-meter/Grounding requirements
• Spill and emergency procedures
• Audit management

 Must possess prior knowledge or be able to learn the following industrial site management:

• Pressure
• Flex hose Requirements; types, ratings commodities, integrity and restraints.
• Emergency Action/Egress/Management Procedures
• Use of appropriate atmospheric monitoring equipment
• Incident management; reporting and investigation
• Operational, Occupational/Industrial Safety
  • OSHA 1910 and OSHA 1926 standards

Skills: 

• Comfortable answering questions in real time and providing supportive, clear guidance
• Comprehend SDS information
• Use/selection of PPE, including respiratory protective devices
• Comprehend state and federal regulatory requirements
• Understand Hazardous Communication (HAZCOM)
• Understand processes, procedures and certifications needed and verification for support of operations

The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and taste or smell.  The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 40 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment: Occasional exposure to dust, fumes, and moderate levels of noise.

Must be able to obtain and maintain eligibility for issuance of a NASA credential. 

Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check and drug test.
